[1706.On the fourteenth <strong>of</strong> December, ten pounds were allowedfor the maintenance <strong>of</strong> a grammar master ;" and such masterto have over and above the said ten pounds 2 pence per weekfor such as are sent to read, 3 pence per week for them thatare sent to write and cipher, and G pence per week for themthat are sent to learn Latin, to be paid by parents and mastersthat send their children or servants to learn as aforesaid." t. k.1704.This year another war was prosecuted with the French andIndians, called Queen Anne's War. It was begun by theIndians in the preceding year, and was productive <strong>of</strong> the mostdreadful cruelty. Several <strong>of</strong> the soldiers from <strong>Lynn</strong> weretaken prisoners. It continued about a year.Colonel Benjamin Church, who commanded in this expedition,wrote a letter to Governor Dudley, requesting. " Thatfour or five hundred pair <strong>of</strong> good Indian shoes be made ; andlet there be a good store <strong>of</strong> cow hides, well tanned, for a supply<strong>of</strong> such shoes, and hemp to make thread, and wax, tomend and make more such shoes when wanted, and a goodstore <strong>of</strong> awls."^On the sixth <strong>of</strong> March, the town, " being informed that severalpersons had cut down several trees or bushes in Nahants,whereby there is like to be no shade for tlie creatures," votedthat no person should cut any tree or bush there, on a penahy<strong>of</strong>ten shillings.Mr. Ivory Curwin was master <strong>of</strong> the grammar school.1706.This year the common lands were divided among the freeholders,according to their possessions within fence. <strong>The</strong>Nahants, which Avere now established as the property <strong>of</strong> thetown, were included in the division. <strong>The</strong> Common only wasexcepted, which was called the Training Field. <strong>The</strong> divisionwas made by a committee <strong>of</strong> three persons, inhabitants <strong>of</strong> othertowns, who were chosen on the fifteenth <strong>of</strong> April. <strong>The</strong>y wereCaptain Samuel Gardner <strong>of</strong> Salem, Mr. John Greenland <strong>of</strong>I Church's Indian Wars.
