1825.] HISTORY OF LYNN. 223John Gilbert Pratt, aged eight years, son <strong>of</strong> Mr. Micajah C.Pratt, was drowned, on the fourteenth <strong>of</strong> April, from a boat,in the harbor.On the twenty-first <strong>of</strong> June, Mr. Joseph Searl, <strong>of</strong> By field,was ordained pastor <strong>of</strong> the Congregational society in <strong>Lynn</strong>field.He continued his connexion with that parish, till the seventeenth<strong>of</strong> September, 1827, when he removed to Stoneham.<strong>The</strong> French General Lafayette, who served in the army <strong>of</strong>the confederation, in the war <strong>of</strong> independence, this year came toAmerica, and was received with general gratulation and welcome.He passed through <strong>Lynn</strong> on the thirty-first <strong>of</strong> August. He wasreceived at Saugus bridge by an escort, consisting <strong>of</strong> a battahon<strong>of</strong> cavalry, the <strong>Lynn</strong> Rifle Company, <strong>Lynn</strong> Light Infantry, theSalem Cadets, and a large number <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers and cidzens, bywhom he was conducted to the <strong>Lynn</strong> Hotel, were an addresswas delivered to him by Captain John White, to which hemade an affectionate reply. After being introduced to manygentlemen and ladies, with several revolutionary soldiers, heascended an open barouche, and passed through two lines <strong>of</strong>the children <strong>of</strong> the town, who threw flowers into his carriageas he proceeded. A salute <strong>of</strong> thirteen guns was fired, on hisentrance into the town; and another <strong>of</strong> twenty-four, when heleft the Hotel. On his way he passed through seven beautifularches, decorated with evergreens, flags, and festoons <strong>of</strong>flowers ; and bearing inscriptions in honor <strong>of</strong> Lafayette andFreedom. Proceeding through the principal streets, he wasreceived, at the eastern boundary <strong>of</strong> the town, by another escort,and conducted to Marblehead.Mr. James Dimon Green was ordained pastor <strong>of</strong> the SecondCongregational Society, on the third <strong>of</strong> November.1825.For several days in the month <strong>of</strong> April, the moon and stars,with the planet Venus, were visible, for several hours, in themiddle <strong>of</strong> the day. <strong>The</strong>re were no clouds, and the sun shonewith a dim light.On the twentieth <strong>of</strong> April, a piece <strong>of</strong> land, adjoining theQuaker burial Ground in <strong>Lynn</strong>, was purchased, by several individuals,and opened as a free burial ground. This was done,because that society had refused to permit a child to be buried
