[1766.observed, in consequence <strong>of</strong> the drought ; and on the Sundayfollowing, there was " a fine shower <strong>of</strong> rain."*1763.Mr. John Treadwell was ordained minister <strong>of</strong> the first parish,on the second <strong>of</strong> March.1765.This year an act was passed, by the Parliament <strong>of</strong> England,called the Stamp Act ; requiring the people <strong>of</strong> the AmericanColonies to employ papers stamped with the royal seal, in allmercantile and legal transactions.This act called forth a generalspirit <strong>of</strong> opposition, particularly in Boston ; where, on thenight <strong>of</strong> the twenty sixth <strong>of</strong> August, a party <strong>of</strong> the people collected,and nearly demolished the house <strong>of</strong> Lieutenant GovernorHutchinson, and several others. In many other placesthe people manifested their displeasure, by tolling bells, andburning the effigies <strong>of</strong> the stamp <strong>of</strong>ficers.Mr. William Perkins was born on the eighteenth <strong>of</strong> February,1738, and graduated at Harvard University in 1758.He was schoolmaster, in the first parish, for several years ; anddied on the ninth <strong>of</strong> October, 1765, aged 27. He was muchadmired and respected for his uncommon abilities, extensiveacquirements, and unaffected manners.1766.On Saturday, the eighth <strong>of</strong> February, an English brig, fromHull, was cast away on Pond Beach, on the south side <strong>of</strong>Nahant.This year the stamp act was repealed. <strong>The</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lynn</strong>manifested their joy by ringing the bell and making bonfires.On the first <strong>of</strong> December, they directed their representative,Ebenezer Burrill, Esquire, to use his endeavors to procure anact to compensate Mr. Hutchinson, and others, for theirin the riot <strong>of</strong> the preceding year.losses1 Collins.
