256 HISTORY OF LYNN.tiers of this colony were Episcopalians; a fact as susceptible ofproof as any part of history whatever. Prince, who stands inthe first rank of our historians, says, " They had been chieflyborn and brought up in the National Church, and had, untiltheir emigration, lived in communion with her. Their ministershad been ordained by her Bishops, and had officiated inher parochial churches, and had made no secession from heruntil they left their native land." The author of the Planter'sPlea, printed in 1630, says, " It may be with good assurancemaintained, that at least three parts of four, of the men thereplanted, are able to justify themselves to have lived in a constantcourse of conformity unto our Church government andorders." Numerous other testimonies might be adduced, butfortunately the first settlers of Massachusetts have placed thisquestion beyond dispute. They acknowledge, in a papersigned by their own hands, that the Church of England is theirdear mother, and that her children are nearest God's throne ofmercy. This is their own language, nor have I taken the advantageof any circumstance to gain a purpose by misrepresentation.I have no possible inducement to deceive mankind.I have sought to introduce no new Gospel, but thatwhich was spoken at the beginning ; to call the attention ofmen to the true faith, the only certain path of salvation. Butthis is a subject too important for the slight notice that can beadmitted into a historical sketch, which has already been unusuallyextended. That the inhabitants of Lynn may discerntheir true interest, and be united in its pursuit—that thetwo next centuries may add still more to their happiness andprosperity than the past have done—that the people of theUnited States may forego all sectional prejudices of religion,and politics—that the voices of slavery and oppression, mayno more be- heard in our land—and that its inhabitants maybe as renowned for their love to the Church, as they are fortheir attachment to the principles of civil Uberty—is the sinceredesire and prayer of the author.
