Alter a short and desperateconflict, Captain Lawrence fell, the colors <strong>of</strong> the Chesapeakewere lowered, and the Shannon with her prize departed forHalifax.<strong>The</strong> anniversary <strong>of</strong> American Independence was this yearcelebrated by the people <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lynn</strong>. An oration was deliveredat the First Congregational meeting-house, by Robert W. Trevett,Esquire ;after which a considerable number <strong>of</strong> the uihabitantsdined at the Hotel.]Mr. Isaac Hurd was ordained pastor <strong>of</strong> the first parish, onthe fifteenth <strong>of</strong> September.1814.<strong>The</strong> district <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lynn</strong>field, which was separated from <strong>Lynn</strong>on the third <strong>of</strong> July 1782, was this year incorporated as a town,on the twenty-eighth <strong>of</strong> February. On the same day, the<strong>Lynn</strong> Mechanics' Bank was incorporated, with a capital <strong>of</strong> onehundred tliousand dollars. <strong>The</strong> Town-House on the Commonwas begun the same month.A company <strong>of</strong> militia, consisting <strong>of</strong> seventy-eight men fromEssex county, was detached, in July, for the defence <strong>of</strong> thesea-coast. Of this number, <strong>Lynn</strong> furnished fifteen, and thewhole were placed under the command <strong>of</strong> Captain SamuelMudge, <strong>of</strong> this town. On the first <strong>of</strong> August, they mustered atDanvers, and on the next day marched to Salem, and encampedon Winter Island. On the twenty-seventh, a violent stormblew down most <strong>of</strong> the tents, and on the next day the detachmentremoved to Fort Lee. On the night <strong>of</strong> the twentyeighth<strong>of</strong> September, a great alarm was occasioned by somemen who were drawing a seine at Beverly. Alarm guns werefired about midnight, and in less than thirty minutes the Salemregiment was drawn up for orders. Nearly sixty old men <strong>of</strong>that town also took their arms, went directly to the fort, andpatriotically <strong>of</strong>fered their services to Captain Mudge. <strong>The</strong>alarm spread to the neighboring towns, and within an hourthe <strong>Lynn</strong> regiment was in arms, and on its march toward Salem.<strong>The</strong> promptitude whh which these two regiments wereformed, the self-possession manifested by the <strong>of</strong>ficers and soldiers,and the readiness with which they marched toward what
