[1744.1741.A difference had existed, for several years, between Mr.Henchman and his parish, in consequence <strong>of</strong> their refusal tomake so large an addition as he desired to his salary, on whichhe declined to accept it. This year he <strong>of</strong>fered to preach lecturesto them gratuitously, for which he received their thanks,and an increase <strong>of</strong> his salaryJGreat commotions were excited in the neighbouring towns,by Mr. Whitefield's preaching. In some places, meetings wereheld almost every evening ; and exhortations and prayers were<strong>of</strong>fered by women and children, which had never before beendone in New^ England.-On the eighteenth <strong>of</strong> February, the Winnesimet ferry boatwas overset, and a Frenchman drowned.^1742.An evening meeting <strong>of</strong>^the followers <strong>of</strong> Mr Whitefield, ondie eleventh <strong>of</strong> March, is'thus noticed. "This evening sundryyoung persons were struck, as they call it, in the religious manner.This is the first <strong>of</strong> so in our town.^"On the eighteenth <strong>of</strong> June, Mr. Nathaniel Collins's house wasstruck by lightning.^On the twelfth <strong>of</strong> October, Mr. Jonathan Norwood fell froma fishing boat, near Naliant, and was taken up dead. On thethirteenth <strong>of</strong> July, 1643, Mr. Moses Norwood, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lynn</strong>, wasdrowned at Boston.1744.On Sunday morning, June third, there was an earthquake,sufficiently violent to throw down stone wall. It was repeatedon the twentieth.^On the fourteenth, a small company <strong>of</strong> men were impressed,to be sent, with other troops from <strong>Massachusetts</strong>, against theFrench and Indians, who were making depredations on thenorthern frontier. <strong>The</strong> town was furnished with a stock <strong>of</strong> powder,which was stored in a closet, beneath the pulpit <strong>of</strong> the firstparish meeting house.1 Parish Records. 2 Collins's Journal.
