Whänau nom<strong>in</strong>ation is more utilised <strong>in</strong> the identification <strong>of</strong> culturespecificgifts <strong>and</strong> talents than <strong>in</strong> other areas <strong>of</strong> abilities <strong>and</strong> qualities. Peer, self, <strong>and</strong> parent nom<strong>in</strong>ationare also relatively high.<strong>The</strong> number <strong>of</strong> identification methods be<strong>in</strong>g employed ranges from one method to all methods. Nearlyhalf <strong>of</strong> schools (45.5%) <strong>in</strong>dicated use <strong>of</strong> between 2 <strong>and</strong> 4 methods <strong>of</strong> identification; however, 16.1% <strong>of</strong>the schools formally identify<strong>in</strong>g culture-specific abilities <strong>and</strong> qualities reported use <strong>of</strong> only onemethod.Identification <strong>of</strong> Physical/Sport Gifts <strong>and</strong> TalentsThis section reports the frequencies for the 486 schools report<strong>in</strong>g formal identification <strong>of</strong> specialphysical <strong>and</strong> sport abilities.Nearly half <strong>of</strong> the 486 schools (47.7%) are formally identify<strong>in</strong>g physical <strong>and</strong> sport abilitiesschoolwide. An analysis by school type <strong>in</strong>dicates that 52.5% <strong>of</strong> 367 primary schools undertak<strong>in</strong>gformal identification <strong>of</strong> physical abilities are do<strong>in</strong>g so schoolwide; 15.3% identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Years 3-4,10.6% identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Years 5-6, <strong>and</strong> 2.5% identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Years 7-8. N<strong>in</strong>eteen po<strong>in</strong>t one percent <strong>of</strong>primary schools did not <strong>in</strong>dicate the year levels <strong>in</strong> which identification takes place. All 48 <strong>of</strong> the<strong>in</strong>termediate schools reported identify<strong>in</strong>g schoolwide (Years 7 <strong>and</strong> 8). Secondary schools report<strong>in</strong>gidentification <strong>of</strong> physical <strong>and</strong> sport<strong>in</strong>g abilities (n = 55) do so schoolwide (53.2%), with 2.1% at Years7-8, 8.5% at Years 9-10, 6.4% at Years 11-12, <strong>and</strong> 29.8% not <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g the year levels. <strong>The</strong> 16 ‘other’schools gave a range <strong>of</strong> responses, with 30% <strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g schoolwide identification <strong>and</strong> 30% not<strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g year levels <strong>of</strong> identification. An analysis by decile rat<strong>in</strong>g shows that 51.3% <strong>of</strong> decile 1-5schools <strong>and</strong> 45.8% <strong>of</strong> decile 6-10 schools formally identify<strong>in</strong>g physical <strong>and</strong> sport abilities are do<strong>in</strong>g soschoolwide.Table 21 shows the types <strong>of</strong> identification methods be<strong>in</strong>g used to identify physical <strong>and</strong> sport<strong>in</strong>gabilities by the 486 schools undertak<strong>in</strong>g formal identification.
