<strong>in</strong>telligences, <strong>in</strong>quiry learn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> higher-level th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. Ability groups operate with<strong>in</strong> classes <strong>and</strong>there is cross-age group<strong>in</strong>g for specific areas such as mathematics <strong>and</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g. Students are alsoencouraged to enter competitions <strong>and</strong> to share their expertise (such as computer skills) with teachers<strong>and</strong> peers. Opportunities are presented for students to take the <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>and</strong> to develop social <strong>and</strong>leadership skills. Students who weren’t <strong>in</strong>itially recognised as gifted are “really tak<strong>in</strong>g it on board <strong>and</strong>fly<strong>in</strong>g.”<strong>The</strong> students <strong>in</strong> Years 7 <strong>and</strong> 8 learn a second language <strong>and</strong> other newer <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong>clude establish<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>ks with a local secondary school with the older students act<strong>in</strong>g as mentors. <strong>The</strong>re is a grow<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>terest from local secondary schools <strong>in</strong> the identification <strong>of</strong> gifted <strong>and</strong> talented students <strong>and</strong> betterliaison so that they are “build<strong>in</strong>g some <strong>of</strong> those bridges.”<strong>The</strong> school is proud <strong>of</strong> the school environment that recognises students’ diverse needs <strong>and</strong> is mak<strong>in</strong>g aconcerted effort to identify the gifted <strong>and</strong> talented students. Through the cluster <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>and</strong> schoolprovisions students are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g experiences that enable them to pursue their own <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>and</strong> passions. “Gifted children have a real opportunity to take someth<strong>in</strong>g further down the path,” the“kids who achieve are accepted <strong>and</strong> recognised.” As the coord<strong>in</strong>ator stated at the end <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terview:I know we’ve got a long journey still but I feel we’re do<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>of</strong>fer [gifted <strong>and</strong>talented education].205
