<strong>The</strong> <strong>Extent</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>of</strong> Identification <strong>and</strong> Provisions forGifted <strong>and</strong> Talented Students <strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong> SchoolsINFORMATION SHEETIN-DEPTH INTERVIEWAs part <strong>of</strong> the M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Education’s <strong>in</strong>itiatives for gifted <strong>and</strong> talented students, a team <strong>of</strong> researchers from MasseyUniversity has been commissioned to <strong>in</strong>vestigate the extent <strong>and</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> identification <strong>and</strong> provisions <strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong>schools. <strong>The</strong> research has three phases: a review <strong>of</strong> the literature; a survey <strong>of</strong> all New Zeal<strong>and</strong> schools; <strong>and</strong> case studies<strong>of</strong> schools with promis<strong>in</strong>g provisions.<strong>The</strong> survey <strong>of</strong> all schools <strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong> has been completed, <strong>and</strong> your school has agreed to work with us dur<strong>in</strong>g phasethree as we exam<strong>in</strong>e promis<strong>in</strong>g practices related to the identification <strong>and</strong> provisions for gifted students. Your school wasselected based upon the comprehensive procedures, identification <strong>and</strong> provisions which have been reported, alongsidethe need to have a sample representative <strong>of</strong> the different types <strong>of</strong> schools <strong>in</strong> New Zeal<strong>and</strong>. Our purpose <strong>in</strong> this phase <strong>of</strong>the research is to gather n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>formation about your school’s ‘journey’ to date, future plans, <strong>and</strong> the enablers<strong>and</strong> bathers to effective identification <strong>and</strong> provisions. From a M<strong>in</strong>istry perspective, the <strong>in</strong>formation you provide will beuseful <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g future directions <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong> gifted <strong>and</strong> talented education. This <strong>in</strong>formation is not be<strong>in</strong>gcollected as a means <strong>of</strong> assess<strong>in</strong>g or judg<strong>in</strong>g you or your school.As the person(s) responsible for gilled <strong>and</strong> talented education <strong>in</strong> your school, we would like to conduct a semistructured<strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>terview with you. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview will be conducted dur<strong>in</strong>g the school thy at a tire convenient toyou. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview should last approximately one <strong>and</strong> a half hours. <strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terview is to ga<strong>in</strong> a furtherunderst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> your school’s organisational strategies, identification procedures <strong>and</strong> provisions for gilled <strong>and</strong> talentedstudents. A set <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview questions is enclosed. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the visit, if feasible, the research team member would like to<strong>in</strong>formally visit <strong>and</strong> observe classrooms or programmes; <strong>and</strong> like access to, <strong>and</strong> when applicable, photocopies <strong>of</strong> anywritten documentation, such as policies, action plans, registers <strong>and</strong> so on for the purpose <strong>of</strong> document analysis. F<strong>in</strong>ally,we would appreciate your assistance <strong>in</strong> the selection <strong>of</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> teachers for the focus group <strong>in</strong>terviews.<strong>The</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from the case studies will be presented across broad themes, as opposed to <strong>in</strong>dividual cases. For example,<strong>in</strong> relation to the steps taken toward effective provisions we will analyse the responses from all case study schools,report<strong>in</strong>g broad generalisations <strong>and</strong> themes which emerge. In this way neither you nor your school will be named oridentified <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>al report<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview will be tape-recorded <strong>and</strong> transcribed for analysis. We will make the transcribed <strong>in</strong>terview available toyou for check<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> accuracy <strong>and</strong> further comment. All data will be stored <strong>in</strong> a secure location at Massey University fora period <strong>of</strong> five years. <strong>The</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> this research will only be used for the purpose <strong>of</strong> submitt<strong>in</strong>g a f<strong>in</strong>al report to theM<strong>in</strong>istry, <strong>and</strong> any other publications <strong>and</strong> presentations which may arise.As compensation for your <strong>in</strong>volvement, one day’s teacher release fund<strong>in</strong>g will be paid to your school.
