who achieved a GPA <strong>of</strong> 80. Over 80% <strong>of</strong> our fall athletes qualified for this recognition, defining the term “scholarathlete.”COMMUNITY BUILDINGOur School Counseling Department trained fifteen peer leaders over the summer who were an integral part <strong>of</strong> ourfreshman orientation program this year. In keeping with our district improvement plan focusing on transition, theleaders personally called each home to check on the transition <strong>of</strong> our freshmen in October.National Honor Society successfully supported the annual “Toys for Tots” drive during the holidays, helping to providejoy to needy children in conjunction with the local Marine Corps. The Renaissance committee reminded students andadults that “snow means slow” at the pre-holiday checkpoint while students and staff exited the parking lot forvacation. In partnership with the <strong>Lunenburg</strong> Community Police detail, the committee tied red holiday ribbons aroundcar antennas, distributed safe driving information and checked drivers for seat belt compliance (with a smile). Themessage was one <strong>of</strong> safety for all!In January, in partnership with the <strong>Lunenburg</strong> PTO, LHS sponsored a career fair for grades 9-12. We were very excitedto be holding this event for our students. This was an opportunity for our students to meet with pr<strong>of</strong>essionals workingin a variety <strong>of</strong> fields and to give them a chance to gather information and to ask questions. It was a very interactiveevent to assist students in their future planning process.Our keynote speaker was Mr. Jon Goode, Vice President <strong>of</strong> Communications <strong>of</strong> the Lowell Spinners. Mr. Goode sharedmany <strong>of</strong> his own life experiences and words <strong>of</strong> wisdom. Besides his pr<strong>of</strong>essional expertise, Mr. Goode also is thefounder <strong>of</strong> the C2 Mission with his wife, to raise money for local children and families affected by Cystic Fibrosis andCerebral Palsy. Goode has minor cerebral palsy in his legs, but was able to attend college on a running scholarship. Mr.Goode shared advice with the students, including: learn from your mistakes, never think you are too good to do any jobyou are asked to do in an organization, and always do more than the minimum you are asked to do. <strong>Lunenburg</strong> HighSchool would like to thank the fifty pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in our area who volunteered their time to share their expertise withour students on our career day.CURRICULUMNew additions to our curriculum this year included courses in Creative Writing and American Government. Our facultynears completion <strong>of</strong> curriculum mapping, creating common assessments to assess student learning and improve ourinstructional practices, and completing our rubrics to measure our school-wide academic expectations for studentlearning, as we prepare for our NEASC visit in 2010.Our music and art programs continue to thrive, producing award winners in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Show andthe Central District and State Chorus, as well as fantastic performances at our concerts and displays all year round.
