THOMAS C. PASSIOS ELEMENTARY SCHOOLChristine L. Bonci, PrincipalWe started the school year with 371 students in 16 classrooms for an average class size <strong>of</strong> 23 students. We constantlystrive to find better ways to meet the collective, as well as the individual, needs <strong>of</strong> our students. Several teachersparticipated in staff development programs throughout the summer and throughout the school year. Topics includeResults, Co-teaching in Instructional Teams, Understanding by Design, Literacy (Junior Great Books, in particular), andResponsive Classroom. Components <strong>of</strong> all these programs have been implemented at our school this year. TheScience Curriculum Taskforce has mapped out the content for each grade level, aligning it to the state sciencecurriculum framework. The new alignment will be implemented during the 2008 – 2009 school year. School-wide all <strong>of</strong>our classroom teachers use Responsive Classroom strategies as part <strong>of</strong> our Academic/Social/Emotional LearningCurriculum including morning meetings, guided discoveries, rules and logical consequences and academic choice. Inaddition, we have developed a common language with regard to Rules and Logical Consequences throughout theschool. Our Pyramid <strong>of</strong> Success works to ensure that our students have the services they need to be successful. Werestored tutoring positions in Grades 3 and 5 this year to help us meet the needs <strong>of</strong> all learners in an inclusive model.We introduced the first “Friendship Club,” a monthly, after school program with over 50 student participants under thedirection <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Susan Cavaioli, School Counselor.Our School Improvement Plan for this year focused on creating common assessments in the core academic areas,fostering an enriched culture and climate, providing a safe environment and the expansion <strong>of</strong> technology opportunitiesfor our students. Our school council met regularly to discuss issues and to develop the annual School ImprovementPlan. Meeting dates are posted on our school calendar at our website. Parents and community members are welcometo attend. The parent elected members for the <strong>2007</strong>-2008 school were Kelly Hansel, Linda Perenzin, EdwardDeschamps and Chandra Pandey. Katy Whitaker served as our community member and Michael Mackin was the schoolcommittee representative. School representatives included: Robert Bourque, Grade 5 Teacher; Susan Cavaioli,Guidance Counselor; and Rhonda Connery, Grade 5 Teacher.As part <strong>of</strong> our safe schools initiative, a new security system was installed this year. Camera monitors were placed atentrances, staff is required to use an access card for entry into the building, motion detectors were installedthroughout the building and visitors are allowed access to the building through the front door by ringing a bell andwaiting for the door lock to be released from the main <strong>of</strong>fice. Visitors are required to sign in and wear an identifyingbadge when visiting the school. Another safety procedure that was implemented this year was the use <strong>of</strong> two-wayradios during recess, Physical Education classes and throughout the building. The radios were purchased by the<strong>Lunenburg</strong> Parent/Teacher Organization.Throughout the school year, the custodial and maintenance staff worked hard to keep our facilities clean and runningsmoothly. New lighting was installed throughout the hallways. The main hallway was painted, the floors stripped andwaxed and new bulletin boards were installed. Our gymnasium floor was stripped and refinished, and the wallsreceived a fresh coat <strong>of</strong> paint. A ramp will soon be installed for easier access to the building from the front entrance.Thomas C. Passios continues to update the school’s website weekly. The site is linked to the <strong>Town</strong> site. Members <strong>of</strong>the community can easily access the site to keep abreast <strong>of</strong> school happenings. You can easily navigate through thesite from the home page. There is a Principal’s Page, News and Announcements, Calendar, Lunch Menus, and manyTeacher pages. You can subscribe to many <strong>of</strong> the pages in order to receive periodic updates via e-mailannouncements.Students and faculty enjoyed many activities that enhanced the climate and culture <strong>of</strong> our school. The annual fallfundraiser and the Haunted House allowed us to provide field trip opportunities at each grade level. Grade 3 visited theConcord Museum and Old Sturbridge Village, Grade 4 went to the Lowell Textile Museum and Peabody Museum, andGrade 5 visited Minuteman National Park and the Seacoast Science Center. Each <strong>of</strong> these experiences was integratedinto our existing curricula and provided the students with hands-on learning. In addition, students participated inprograms that addressed bullying behavior, the annual Turkey Trot, the annual holiday and spring concerts, theSpelling Bee, Lip Sync performances, Read Across America and the annual Memorial Day program. The student-runbookstore opened under the direction <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Patricia Charland. Students in Grade 5 oversee all aspects <strong>of</strong> thebookstore including advertising, sales and inventory.
