Middle and High School NewsNews from the Middle and High SchoolMS News and Events!As I sit down to write this article, I am thinking about theupcoming “5 th to 6 th Grade Transition Evening” and this isputting me in mind of transitions in general. As we near theend of the school year, almost everyone that I see is dealingwith this issue in one way or another—prospective studentsand parents touring the school in anticipation of their moveto Stavanger, 12 th grade students preparing for exams andwatching their mail boxes, students and parents making thatannual pilgrimage to the counsellor’s office to prepare forthe coming years—it is the same every year.However, just because it is common does not mean that itis easy. Whether you are staying in Stavanger and movingbetween grades or schools or whether you are moving, you andyour children will be transitioning into new experiences. Here is an update on some of theactivities and events that have taken place recently and somethat will be happening soon.This week, we celebrated all the achievements and events from 3 rdquarter at our Recognition Ceremony (April 11th). This eventbegan with an unforgettable piece of ‘Willy Wonka’ OompaLoompa entertainment from the MS staff! This was a tributefrom the staff to the students for all the hard work they had putinto making the MS musical another great success. I understandthat it was hilarious to watch! Thank you middle school studentsfor a memorable ‘Willy Wonka’ this year and thank you middleschool staff for being so willing to be foolish!Congratulations to Echo Li (piano) and Shruti Kar Ray (guitar)for their memorable performances at this ceremony. News from the Middle and High School8 th Grade Leirskole – TrysilThe 8 th grade students and their teachers have just returned froma week to Trysil, a ski area on the east coast of Norway. Thisoutdoor education (leirskole) week was a wonderful experienceof physical exercise, teamwork and cooperation. Every studentlearned a new skill, achieved a personal challenge and learnedmore about the students in their grade and their teachers.Congratulations to all 8 th grade students on a wonderful week!6 th Grade Trip – OlsoThis week we welcomed back the entire 6 th grade from amemorable trip to Oslo. The weather was wonderful and thestudents and teachers all had a superb time experiencing all theculture that Oslo can offer. Students were eager to learn andget to know each other a little better and were very willing toentertain when necessary! I understand that the Oompa Loompadance was performed twice - once outside the palace (to see ifthey could make the guards laugh!) and once on the stage atthe NRK Television Studios. I’m glad to hear that the ‘WillyWonka’ show has reached a wider audience!NECIS Swimming - SwedenMany congratulations to the ISS swimming team (JV andVarsity) and their coaches, Taylor Cox, Cheryl Hogarth andCarolyn Payne on their amazing success at the recent NECISswimming competition in Sweden. The students displayedwonderful teamwork and talent and were excellent representativesof the school. Well done!HomeroomThe advisory theme for April and May is ‘Coping withChange and Transitions’. Every middle school student will beexperiencing some form of change in the next few weeks: gradeto grade, MS to HS, moving schools and/or saying goodbye tofriends. All students will be given the opportunity to discusstheir feelings at this emotional time and be given strategies tohelp them cope with their feelings.In addition, the 8 th grade students have starting taking anintensive ‘study skills’ course for four homeroom periods perweek, in preparation for their 8 th grade exams in at the end ofthis month (April 30 th , May 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th .)These study sessions will include:• How I study and here I study best• Following written directions• Test-taking skills and tips• Preparing for objective questions• Memorization skills• Preparing for essay questionsThe 5 th grade students will be visiting the 6 th grade homeroom inthe near future. This is part of the process of transition for the5 th grade into the 6 th grade and the middle school. The 5 th gradestudents will have the opportunity to be in the MS hallwaysand will have the opportunity to ask the current 6 th grade somequestions.Enjoy the final quarter of the year!
