3.3 Pedestrian &Bicycle ChallengesFigure 4: Existing Roadway NetworkPedestrian access throughout the project site is limited due totopographic constraints and minimal connectivity within thestreet network. Existing land uses are primarily industrialand not conducive to pedestrian activity. Currently waterfrontaccess is limited to a portion <strong>of</strong> the Bay Trail, a Class I facilitythat provides a completely separate right-<strong>of</strong>-way and isdesignated for the exclusive use <strong>of</strong> bicycles and pedestrians,which extends along the southern shoreline <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Candlestick</strong><strong>Point</strong> State Recreation Area.Currently, bicycle facilities within the project area include Class<strong>II</strong>I bicycle routes, which provide for a right-<strong>of</strong>-way designatedby signs and pavement markings for shared use with motorvehicles. Existing Class <strong>II</strong>I bicycle facilities are located onCarroll Avenue, Fitch Street, <strong>Hunters</strong> <strong>Point</strong> Expressway andJamestown Avenue. The existing bicycle facilities provideminimal access to the proposed project site. There are noClass <strong>II</strong> on-street bicycle facilities separating vehicular trafficfrom bicycles within the project site.Existing Conditions18
