IT ISREQUIRED IN YOUR CONTRACT, UNDER THE NEWDEAL RULES, TO TAKE THEM (EXCEPT INEMERGENCY OR EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES).NOT TEN MINUTES SNACKING A QUICK SANDWICHWHILST FILLING IN THE PAPERWORK AND GULPINGDOWN A QUICK DRINK ON THE WARD, BUT APROPER BREAK !For all Junior doctors, the following applies, to theprovision of “natural breaks”.“Within full shifts natural breaks will be needed awayfrom clinical duty. It is reasonable to provide at leasta 30 minutes break after approximately fourhours’ continuous duty. Trusts should devise workingpractices which allow proper cover <strong>for</strong> these absences.(These natural breaks must also, of course, beprovided during the normal working day, <strong>for</strong>doctors on on-call rotas or partial shifts and should notbe considered part of their rest periods.)”SO FOLLOW THE PROTOCOL AND TAKE A BREAK.IF THE PROTOCOL ISN’T WORKING – LET THEDIRECTORATE KNOW IN WRITING AS SOON ASPOSSIBLE, SO ACTION CAN BE TAKEN.61
