National Seminar on Food and Environment Security<br />

The Agricultural University Teachers<br />

Association (AUTA) recently organized a fiveday<br />

seminar on “Technological Interventions<br />

for Food and Environment Security” at Summer<br />

Campus of University of Peshawar at Bara Gali,<br />

Abbottabad. Dr. Khan Bahadar Marwat, Vice<br />

Chancellor, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural<br />

University, Peshawar was the chief guest in the<br />

inaugural session. Dr. Muhammad Latif,<br />

Director General, Research and Development,<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Commission (HEC) was the<br />

guest of honour on the occasion.<br />

About 250 scientists and faculty from<br />

Agricultural University Peshawar, Hazara<br />

University, Agricultural Research and Extension<br />

Departments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and PhD<br />

scholars attended the seminar. The seminar<br />

was jointly funded by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa<br />

Agricultural University, Peshawar and the<br />

<strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Commission.<br />

Eminent guest speakers of the seminar<br />

included Dr. Abdul Mujeeb Kazi, HEC Foreign<br />

Faculty Professor and Head, Wheat<br />

Cytogenetics and Wide Crosses, NARC, Dr.<br />

Farooq-e-Azam, Director, NIFA, Peshawar, Dr.<br />

Shafqat Farooq, Director, Technical, PAEC,<br />

Islamabad, Dr. Ahmad Baksh Mahar,<br />

Coordinator, Hybrid Seed Project, NARC and Dr.<br />

HEC in one of its development project has<br />

granted Rs. 92 million for faculty development<br />

of the Bahria University. A total of 20<br />

scholarships (10 for MS and 10 for PhD) were<br />

approved. Under MS Programme, six scholars<br />

had already completed their MS Programme<br />

and joined the university whereas four<br />

remaining scholars completed their<br />

programme in July 2010 and have joined the<br />

University.<br />

These four scholars are Khawaja Qasim<br />

Maqbool, Umair Sajid Hashmi, Waqar Ahmed<br />

and Freeha Azmat who have completed their<br />

MS in Advanced Distributed Systems with<br />

distinction. Freeha Azmat won the<br />

department's award for “Best Student” and<br />

“Best Research Project”. The scholars showed<br />

outstanding results in taught courses as well as<br />

the individual project during the course of their<br />

Ghulam Muhammad Ali, Principal Scientist, NARC. They<br />

highlighted the initiatives being undertaken by various research<br />

organizations for food and environment security in Pakistan.<br />

Meritorious Professor Dr. Riaz Ahmad Khattak highlighted the<br />

impact of climate change on agriculture in Pakistan. Other<br />

prominent speakers of the seminar were Dr. Zahoor Ahmad Swati<br />

Dean, Faculty of Crop Production Sciences, Dr. Munir Khan<br />

Khattak, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Dr. Hamidullah<br />

Shah, Dean, Faculty of Nutrition Sciences, Dr. Mian Inayatullah,<br />

Chairman, Entomology Department, Dr. Zahir Shah, Soils and<br />

Environmental Sciences Department, Dr. Abdur Rab and Dr. Ibrar<br />

Hussain Shah, Horticulture Department.<br />

Young faculty members and PhD scholars also presented their<br />

papers in various technical sessions of the seminar. “Overview of<br />

Research System in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Challenges and Future<br />

Priorities” was presented by Mian Attauddin Kakakhel, Director,<br />

Cereal Crops Research Institute, Pirsabak, Nowshera who was<br />

also the chief guest in the closing ceremony.<br />

10 BU Scholars Complete MS from University of Leicester<br />

degree. Along with academics, they actively participated in cocurricular<br />

activities and department seminars. The scholars<br />

attended and completed Leicester Award for Experience<br />

Employability which consisted of workshops on team building<br />

activities and presentation skills.<br />

Umair Sajid acted as a Course representative in the Students<br />

Staff <strong>Committee</strong> of the Computer Science Department. His active<br />

participation as a Course Rep during the year won him a Gold<br />

Course Rep Accreditation Award.<br />
