National Seminar on Food and Environment Security
The Agricultural University Teachers
Association (AUTA) recently organized a fiveday
seminar on “Technological Interventions
for Food and Environment Security” at Summer
Campus of University of Peshawar at Bara Gali,
Abbottabad. Dr. Khan Bahadar Marwat, Vice
Chancellor, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural
University, Peshawar was the chief guest in the
inaugural session. Dr. Muhammad Latif,
Director General, Research and Development,
Higher Education Commission (HEC) was the
guest of honour on the occasion.
About 250 scientists and faculty from
Agricultural University Peshawar, Hazara
University, Agricultural Research and Extension
Departments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and PhD
scholars attended the seminar. The seminar
was jointly funded by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Agricultural University, Peshawar and the
Higher Education Commission.
Eminent guest speakers of the seminar
included Dr. Abdul Mujeeb Kazi, HEC Foreign
Faculty Professor and Head, Wheat
Cytogenetics and Wide Crosses, NARC, Dr.
Farooq-e-Azam, Director, NIFA, Peshawar, Dr.
Shafqat Farooq, Director, Technical, PAEC,
Islamabad, Dr. Ahmad Baksh Mahar,
Coordinator, Hybrid Seed Project, NARC and Dr.
HEC in one of its development project has
granted Rs. 92 million for faculty development
of the Bahria University. A total of 20
scholarships (10 for MS and 10 for PhD) were
approved. Under MS Programme, six scholars
had already completed their MS Programme
and joined the university whereas four
remaining scholars completed their
programme in July 2010 and have joined the
University.
These four scholars are Khawaja Qasim
Maqbool, Umair Sajid Hashmi, Waqar Ahmed
and Freeha Azmat who have completed their
MS in Advanced Distributed Systems with
distinction. Freeha Azmat won the
department's award for “Best Student” and
“Best Research Project”. The scholars showed
outstanding results in taught courses as well as
the individual project during the course of their
Ghulam Muhammad Ali, Principal Scientist, NARC. They
highlighted the initiatives being undertaken by various research
organizations for food and environment security in Pakistan.
Meritorious Professor Dr. Riaz Ahmad Khattak highlighted the
impact of climate change on agriculture in Pakistan. Other
prominent speakers of the seminar were Dr. Zahoor Ahmad Swati
Dean, Faculty of Crop Production Sciences, Dr. Munir Khan
Khattak, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Dr. Hamidullah
Shah, Dean, Faculty of Nutrition Sciences, Dr. Mian Inayatullah,
Chairman, Entomology Department, Dr. Zahir Shah, Soils and
Environmental Sciences Department, Dr. Abdur Rab and Dr. Ibrar
Hussain Shah, Horticulture Department.
Young faculty members and PhD scholars also presented their
papers in various technical sessions of the seminar. “Overview of
Research System in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Challenges and Future
Priorities” was presented by Mian Attauddin Kakakhel, Director,
Cereal Crops Research Institute, Pirsabak, Nowshera who was
also the chief guest in the closing ceremony.
10 BU Scholars Complete MS from University of Leicester
degree. Along with academics, they actively participated in cocurricular
activities and department seminars. The scholars
attended and completed Leicester Award for Experience
Employability which consisted of workshops on team building
activities and presentation skills.
Umair Sajid acted as a Course representative in the Students
Staff Committee of the Computer Science Department. His active
participation as a Course Rep during the year won him a Gold
Course Rep Accreditation Award.
