National Mental<br />

Health Programme<br />

for Flood Affected People<br />

Eminent psychiatrists from all over the country have<br />

launched an immediate programme for provision of<br />

evidence based, scientific, and comprehensive<br />

health care to survivors of all forms of psychotrauma<br />

resulting from the recent floods. In a meeting held at<br />

the University of Health Sciences (UHS) on Friday,<br />

the programme named as “The Psychotrauma Relief<br />

Plan for Survivors of Flood 2010 (PTRPF 2010)” was<br />

unanimously approved.<br />

The plan aims at coordinating all mental health<br />

initiatives for flood affectees besides training of<br />

health personnel on flood relief duties in provision of<br />

mental health psychosocial support and rational use<br />

of psychotropic drugs. It also envisages integration<br />

of psychosocial care into the work of all the clusters<br />

and especially in general health care.<br />

Highlighting the major objectives of the plan, Prof.<br />

Mowadat H. Rana of Centre for Trauma Research and<br />

Psychosocial Intervention, Armed Forces Institute<br />

for Mental Health, Rawalpindi said that it aimed at<br />

ensuring availability of psychological first aid by<br />

trained manpower at all health service delivery<br />

points and in the community.<br />

Addressing the participants, Prof. Malik Hussain<br />

Mubbashar, UHS Vice Chancellor said that recent<br />

floods had been one of the biggest disasters in<br />

Pakistan. He warned that if no attention was paid to<br />

the psychosocial aspects, “this flood will be<br />

converted into blood”. He said that mental health<br />

problems are far more severe in magnitude than<br />

other health issues in flood affected areas.<br />

UAF Dispatches Relief Goods<br />

The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF) recently dispatched<br />

five truckloads of flour bags, clothes, shoes, pulses, edible oil, dry food,<br />

animal feed and pure drinking water worth of Rs. 20 lac. These relief<br />

goods were distributed among the flood victims of Jampur, Rajanpur<br />

and Shah Jamal District, Muzaffargarh.<br />

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan, Vice Chancellor, UAF<br />

reiterated that a relief package worth Rs. 50 million has been devised<br />

which would comprise of with the donations of donors as well as<br />

campus community. He said that in the 2 phase, 5000 mound wheat<br />

seed will be distributed among the farmers for the forthcoming sowing<br />

Association. The recently held annual event was attended<br />

by the graduates of Quaid-i-Azam University belonging to<br />

various walks of life.<br />

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Murtaza Noor, Secretary<br />

General, QAU Alumni Association highlighted the main<br />

achievements of the Association since its inception. He<br />

informed the participants that the Association has initiated<br />

various programmes for the welfare of present students of<br />

QAU including need based scholarships and construction of<br />

social sciences seminar hall.<br />

He said that 20 scholarships would be awarded to the<br />

students belonging to flood affected areas in three years in<br />

the disciplines of Business <strong>Education</strong>, International<br />

Relations and Economics.<br />

Prof. Dr. Masoom Yasinzai, Vice Chancellor, QAU who<br />

graced the occasion as Guest of Honour briefed about<br />

different initiatives undertaken by University administration<br />

for faculty, institutional development and promotion of<br />

research culture. Mr. Sikandar Ahmed Rai, President, QAU<br />

Alumni Association said that Alumni of Quaid-i-Azam<br />

University are playing an active role in developing goodwill<br />

for the University. “They are also helping the University for<br />

establishing new programmes.”<br />
