University News th Institute of Space Technology Holds 5 Convocation th The Institute of Space Technology (IST) organized its 5 Convocation 2010 with the graduation of 53 students in the disciplines of Aerospace and Communication Systems Engineering on August 9, 2010. General Tariq Majid, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee was the chief guest on the occasion. The chief guest awarded 27 students with BS degree in Aerospace Engineering and 26 students were conferred BS degree in Communication Systems Engineering. He gave away the President of Pakistan Gold Medals to Ms Kiran Fatima of Aerospace Engineering and Mr. Faran Mahmood of Communication System Engineering who stood first in their respective programmes. He also decorated the students with Vice Chancellor’s Medal for best final year projects. The students were Mr. Mustafa Ali Ghazi and Mr. Muhammad Farooq Hayder from Aerospace Engineering and Mr. Faran Mahmood and Mr. Muhammad Bilal Akhtar from Communication Systems Engineering. UVAS, AIT Discuss Collaboration The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, and the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore will collaborate in areas like livestock management, aquaculture fisheries management and other management disciplines. This was suggested by a three member delegation from AIT led by Prof. Said Irandost, Institute's President. They called on Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Dean, UVAS Faculty of Animal Production and Technology. Both sides discussed the areas of mutual cooperation to enhance the academic and technological partnership between both the institutions. The meeting was arranged by Mr. Sohail Mahmood, Ambassador of Pakistan in Thailand. Dr. Pasha suggested that both the institutions could work together for joint-degree offering, collaborative r e s e a r c h p r o j e c t s , a n d faculty/students e x c h a n g e programmes. He said the UVAS had started new academic disciplines first time in Pakistan like Dairy Technology, Poultry Technology, 15 Speaking on the occasion, General Tariq Majid said that Space Technology plays a vital role in our everyday life. “Institutes of higher education, whether privately or publicly funded, have a special responsibility and mandate to help Pakistan in achieving the objectives and aspirations set in our national space vision.” He appreciated the services of the Higher Education Commission, Strategic Plans Division and SUPARCO in realizing the importance of higher education in Space Science and Technology to fulfil the requirements of the new millennium. Engr. Imran Rahman, Vice Chancellor, felicitated the graduating students on their hard work and accomplishing their studies with great success. He advised the graduating class to deepen their sense of public responsibility and to find solutions to the society’s problems. IST also showcased various projects of the graduating students on the occasion. Bioinformatics, Fisheries and Medicines in recent years. Dr. Naureen, Dean, UVAS Faculty of Fisheries and Wildlife, suggested collaboration in aquacultures and e n v i r o n m e n t r e s o u r c e development. She said Pakistan was prosperous in aquaculture, however, there was a need of skilled and educated human resources to boost the export-base of this sector. Dr. Faiz Shah, AIT Development Management head agreed to develop a partnership model for faculty and management students.
University News MUET Lecture on Optical Networks that the vision of this Society is to be the organization of choice for communications and related professionals throughout the world. The Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (IICT), Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro organised a guest series lecture on “Optical Networks: Past, Present and Future” in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineering (IEEE) Communication Society (COMSOC), Karachi Chapter. The seminar was attended by a large number of faculty members, students and telecom professionals. In his welcome address Dr. BS Chowdhry, President of COMSOC and Director IICT said that IEEE Communications Society is a professional society of the IEEE. “It promotes the advancement of science, technology and applications in communications and related disciplines. It fosters presentation and exchange of information among its members and the technical community throughout the world. The Society maintains the highest standard of professionalism and technical competency,” he said. Engr. Muhammad Saad, In-charge Student Committee, IEEE COMSOC Karachi Chapter, highlighted different advantages of the Society. He said MAJU Faculty Members Visit EU Universities under eLINK Project Mohammad Ali Jinnah University (MAJU), Islamabad collaborated with 10 other universities from Europe and Asia under an EU funded project eLINK (East-West Link for Innovation, Networking and Knowledge exchange, http://www.elink-edu.eu/). The project aims at developing new and enhancing existing cooperative teaching and research links and establishing a sustainable virtual learning platform to continue collaborative activities. eLINK will also form a collaborative framework for human resource development through the training and upgrading of the skills of the junior faculty staff, undergraduate students, postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers in ICT, engineering, technology, business and management. Other Asian countries in eLINK include Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, China and Singapore. The European countries in this project are UK, France, Italy and Hungary. There have been two physical meetings of the project, one in Bangladesh and one in Morocco. Dr. Nayyer Masood of MAJU, who is the local coordinator of this project, attended both these meetings. This project includes 51 visits of students and academic staff for different time periods. Seven of MAJU faculty members visited different EU universities for a period of two months. They include Mr. Ansir Ali Rajput, Università degli Studi del Sannio, Italy, Dr. Noor M. Khan, Budapesti 16 The guest speaker Dr. Fahim Aziz Umrani, who has recently returned from UK after his doctorate, delivered a talk on “Optical Networks: Past, Present and Future”. He presented information about all-optical network of the future which may provide highcapacity, low-cost transport for Internet, multimedia and advanced digital services. In his concluding address, Dr. MA Uqaili, Pro-Vice Chancellor, MUET said that telecommunication is very rapidly changing field and such seminars provide excellent opportunities to interact with the people who are really expert in their field. He mentioned that IEEE makes available networking opportunities that are essential to young engineers. Corvinus Egyetem, Hungary, Mr. Arif Vaseer, Université LUMIERE LYON2, France, Ms. Maria Mashkoor, Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem, Hungary, Dr. Amir Qayyum, Université LUMIERE LYON2, France, Mr. Nauman Sharif, Staffordshire University, UK, and Mr. Nasir Rasool, Université LUMIERE LYON2, France. During these visits, the Pakistani scholars had meetings with European counterparts in different universities, research l a b s a n d b u s i n e s s organizations. As a result of these visits, different joint projects have been initiated with different universities and an MoU has been signed with University of Lumeire Lyon 2. Not only this, eLINK will provide a foundation for fostering new partnerships and reinforcing existing collaborations between Asian and EU universities that will be useful for MAJU and other universities of Pakistan.
