UoG Seminar Underlines Importance of Census
“We must not politicize the issue of
census which unfortunately has
been postponed, though due to
indispensible circumstances and
emergencies. Census shapes a
fundamental document, the source
of sustained social development,
g o v e r n m e n t ' s p l a n n i n g ,
demarcation of constituencies,
allocations of seats in parliament,
NFC awards, planning of public and
private sector organizations,
health, child labour, gender
disaggregation and research. We
are also faced with a calamity of
gigantic proportions but still as
soon as possible we have to go for
census.”
These views were expressed by Ms.
Attiya Inayatullah, Member
National Assembly and former
Federal Minister in her keynote
address during a national seminar
on World Population Day organized
by the University of Gujrat (UoG) in
Dr. Munawar Mirza
Awarded Honorary DLit
by Glasgow University
The University of Glasgow, one of the top universities of
UK, conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters
(DLit) on Prof. Dr. Munawar S. Mirza, Vice Chancellor,
University of Education, Lahore in recognition of her
contribution, services and great distinction in the field of
Education in Pakistan and at international level.
collaboration with the United
Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The theme of the seminar was
“Everyone Counts”.
The seminar, presided over by Ms.
Inayat Ullah, was also attended by
Mr. Jose Ferraris, UNFPA Officer
Incharge in Pakistan, Mr. Shaukat
Hayat Durrani, Secretary, Ministry
of Population Welfare, Dr. Rashid
Amjad, Vice Chancellor, Pakistan

Economics (PIDE) and Prof. Dr.
Mohammad Nizamuddin, Vice
Chancellor, UoG.
In his welcome address, the Vice
Chancellor highlighted the
necessity of such deliberations in
the present scenario. He focused
on the main actors engaged in this
structural exercise.

development, economic planning
and other multifarious areas of our
national life including research,” he
said.
Mr. Ferraris brought out the role of
UNFPA in helping nations with
material and moral support for
developing programmes around
the world in different countries,
which may be conducive to the
better life conditions and happiness
of the common man. He offered the
services of UNFPA for holding
census in Pakistan.
The participants of the seminar
deliberated upon population
census and national development,
importance of conducting timely
census, gender dimension of
population census and changing
age structure, and the role of media
in making population census a
successful exercise.
Being founder Chairperson of National Accreditation
Council for Teacher Education (NACTE), she has
undertaken the challenge to develop a system for
improving teacher education in Pakistan.
