32Support Services:Support Services manages the Bureau’s property room, Court Liaison Unit, the Summary WarrantSquad, information systems liaison and the Central <strong>Report</strong>s & Records Unit (CRRU). Sworn personnelwho work in the Office <strong>of</strong> Municipal Investigations are assigned to Support Services for payroll andpersonnel management functions.Property/Supply Room The Property/Supply Room maintains and manages operations pertaining toevidence seized, property recovered and supplies, uniforms & equipment for the Bureau <strong>of</strong> Police.The Property/Supply Room is where citizens go to recover property that had been seized as evidence ina case and where employees <strong>of</strong> the Bureau <strong>of</strong> Police go to get general supplies police uniforms andequipment.The following rules apply:• Any property, the ownership <strong>of</strong> which is not disputed and which is not required as evidence, maybe turned over to the rightful or lawful owner by the <strong>of</strong>ficer in charge <strong>of</strong> the zone or unitconcerned. A receipt in duplicate signed by the owner shall be obtained.• Property held as evidence shall not be disposed <strong>of</strong> or released unless the case has been disposed<strong>of</strong> by the Court or its release has been authorized by the commanding <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the zone or unitconcerned, subject to the approval <strong>of</strong> the Chief <strong>of</strong> Police.• Property held as evidence which is <strong>of</strong> a perishable nature or is such that it is urgently needed byits owner may be released only by authorization <strong>of</strong> the commanding <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the zone or unitconcerned. Under these circumstances, the evidence shall be photographed before releasing it.• No weapon may be recovered from the Property Room after same has been used to commit afelonious crime or act <strong>of</strong> violence.• No weapon shall be returned to any claimant unless the person first obtains a "Court Order"directing the return <strong>of</strong> the particular weapon.Evidence that is held at the Property Room will only be released under one <strong>of</strong> the following listedcircumstances:• Court Order – Property is to be picked up and signed for by the person named on the court order;• Needed for Court;• Release to Owner – Owner must sign for and pick up the property at the Property Room;• Income Tax Levy;• Federal authorities when they assume jurisdiction in a case;• Items to be sent to another police agency.In <strong>2011</strong>, the Property Room:• Processed, warehoused and maintained chain-<strong>of</strong>-custody <strong>of</strong> 3,227 numbered cases.• Destroyed over 1,693 weapons.• Deposited $271,830.88 (2009 monies)*.• Collected $784,785.00 in <strong>2011</strong> with $390,351.36 currently on-hand.***Deposits made following external audits <strong>of</strong> property room, 2008 is the most recent year eligible for deposit.**Difference between collected and on-hand values reflects monies released from police custody.
