Message from the Director of PublicSafety5Dear Citizens:Public safety is the most important service a community can provide.As Public Safety Director for the City of Pittsburgh, I take this commitmentseriously. Pittsburgh’s recent successes, such as continually declining crimerates or being acknowledged as “America’s Most Livable City” year after year,would not be possible without the vital contributions of the men and womenwho proudly serve in the Bureau of Police.Once again I want to thank each and every member of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for theirdedicated service. Your professionalism and commitment to Pittsburgh’s citizens, businesses, andvisitors is admirable, and your hard work has precipitated historic lows in both Part I and Part II crimes,which declined for the sixth consecutive year.This trend is the result of a citywide effort, with contributions from citizens, community groups,business groups, and local leaders. Mayor Ravenstahl and Chief Harper’s emphasis on block watchesand faith-based initiatives, as well as school and youth involvement has played an important part inthese encouraging numbers. Technology has also played a vital role in these efforts, as our camerasystem is continuing to be implemented in several City neighborhoods and important investments havebeen made in Police vehicles and equipment. Nevertheless, the bulk of the credit goes to the membersof the Police Bureau, as you continue to make our citizens proud of our City and your dedication to dutyand selflessness exemplify the best of public service.Looking to the future, I reaffirm to you my commitment in providing you with the resources needed toguarantee the safety of you and our City.
