WHAT’ S NEEDED>>Teaching and Learning for the 21st CenturyPlimpton Hall was built in 1927, and at the time, it wasa model of current teaching methods. Classes weredesigned around an autocratic teaching style that positionedthe teacher at the front of the classroom as thegiver of knowledge, and students lined up in rows asrecipients of the knowledge. This model is limited andoutdated for today’s educational standards.Today’s world demands critical thinkers who can synthesizediverse perspectives and complex information andeffectively apply them. To meet this challenge, we mustprovide our faculty and students with contemporary,flexible facilities that are specifically designed to supportmodern learning methods and to reflect Tilton’s longheldcommitment to collaboration, teamwork andbuilding relationships.OUR SOLUTION>>The Academic BuildingWe are creating a learning environment that supports andexemplifies our school mission. We are developing acontemporary learning environment where collaboration isenhanced, group study is welcomed and various academicdisciplines are brought together to improve the total Tiltonlearning experience.The new facility will connect to Plimpton Hall to the west,creating the “academic quad” Tilton has long envisioned.The new academic building includes:• 38,000 square feet of space• The Center for Learning• Wireless technology and smartboards throughout• Eight separate “Green Design” features• Biology, Physics, Chemistry labs• 100-seat lecture hall• Math/Science integrated classrooms and offices• Greenhouse• Language labs and classrooms“Tower Hall” will connect the new building to Plimptonand is an open atrium space spanning up all three floors toallow majestic views of Knowles clock tower.8 | Fall 2006
IT’S TIME TO GIVETransformational…life-changing…proud…challenging…home away fromhome. Tilton School alumni and parents repeat these phrases again andagain when speaking of their own personal Tilton Experience. Through strongrelationships with faculty, staff and administrators, students learn to pursuetheir lives with passion and integrity. We believe in the connections betweenlearning and life, and we become lifelong proponents of the education wereceived here at Tilton School. We are fortunate to be part of this school,which has done so much for all of us. Now, Tilton needs each one of us.It’s time.
