class notes32William Crangle writes, “At 92 years <strong>of</strong> age,I am fortunate to report that my memories <strong>of</strong>undergraduate days at <strong>Tilton</strong> are still strongand provide me with happy moments forwhich I am very grateful.”36Ruth Moses Doyle attended Alumni Weekendand shared remembrances <strong>of</strong> her time at<strong>Tilton</strong>. She earned her undergraduate degreefrom Boston University and went on toBoston College Law <strong>School</strong>. She was in thesecond class <strong>of</strong> women allowed in the Law<strong>School</strong>. In her class, she was one <strong>of</strong> twowomen. She remembers there were nowomen’s bathrooms, so she and the otherwomen would have to go on the “buddysystem”—where one would go into the bathroomand the other would perform lookoutduty. She is one <strong>of</strong> seven sisters—three otherscame to <strong>Tilton</strong>. Her dad was a local farmer,and she came to <strong>Tilton</strong> before the local highschool was built, so it was free. <strong>Tilton</strong> was agreat start for her, she said. She had thenatural inclination toward education, but notthe opportunity or means. <strong>Tilton</strong> gave her agood beginning and planted the seed <strong>of</strong> highereducation for her. She practiced law for 50years, retiring in 1999. She attended AlumniWeekend with her son Thomas Doyle.41Donald Campbell writes, “For me, the <strong>Tilton</strong>Boys <strong>School</strong> in February 1943 was thebeginning <strong>of</strong> 23 years <strong>of</strong> Naval service,which included WWII as a carrier-basedfighter pilot and rising to the rank <strong>of</strong>Commander and Commanding Officer <strong>of</strong> acarrier-based jet attack squadron. My finalduty was on an admiral’s staff helping torun the Navy’s end <strong>of</strong> the Vietnam War.From early February to early April 1943, Iwas in initial flight training in the U.S.Navy—a class <strong>of</strong> 40 students.”43Stan Eilenberg and Ed Rawson write, “Wesadly learned <strong>of</strong> the passing <strong>of</strong> our dearfriend and classmate, Francis Sklepowicz,<strong>Tilton</strong> College class <strong>of</strong> 1943. Fran was anoutstanding basketball player while at <strong>Tilton</strong>and a fine human being.”Robert Bermudes Jr., Robert Bermudes ’48 andPeter Bermudes.45Robert Smith writes, “Been through several heartprocedures and am on the road to recovery—would like to hear from any classmates.”47Robert Black was recently honored byFlorida Southern College with the HalWaters Communication Alumnus <strong>of</strong> the YearAward. A graduate <strong>of</strong> Florida SouthernCollege and Columbia University Graduate<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Journalism, Bob has distinguishedhimself as a journalist and public relationspr<strong>of</strong>essional for more than 50 years. Overthat time, he was a reporter for theAssociated Press, the public relationsmanager for Swissair’s North America division,executive vice president for H.A. Bruno& Assoc., and public relations director forthe National Council on Aging. In addition,Bob worked for TIME Inc., New York Life andAT&T in public relations capacities. He hasbroadcast live for NBC radio, the AssociatedPress, and the Connecticut Radio Network.48Robert Bermudes enjoyed a visit on campusthis summer with his sons, Robert Jr. andPeter. Rob and Peter are the oldest andyoungest sons respectively <strong>of</strong> Bob and SallyBermudes. <strong>The</strong>ir middle son, Mark, wasunable to make the trip with them.Fall 2006 | 33
