Poetry was in the air at Tilton School on March 30, 2006. PulitzerPrize-winning poet Franz Wright visited classes and gave a free poetryreading to an enthusiastic crowd. Mr. Wright led an afternoon workshopfor Advanced Placement English students and for students with aspecial interest in poetry. His intensity and passion for the art of poetryleft a memorable impression. He emphasized the importance oflearning from the old traditions and from the best poetry of the past aswell as contemporary poetry. He also encouraged students to workhard at whatever they love to do, whether playing baseball, solvingmathematical problems or writing, and said that moments of inspirationwill come when least expected. He reminded students to payattention to the everyday beauty of life and to find freedom from traditionby mastering tradition first (i.e. read a lot of good poetry!). In theevening, Mr. Wright read selections of his poetry from Walking toMartha’s Vineyard and from his recent publication, God’s Silence, to anaudience of students, teachers and members of the local community.During the Science Department Open House on April 7, 2006,about 30 students demonstrated their musical instruments andabout 40 students from Integrated Science, Marine Biology,Advanced Physics and other Science classes displayed theirresearch. Topics ranged from wind farming to color theory.
