around campus During spring break, students in the Caribbean Marine Ecologyclass spent a week in the Caribbean British Virgin Islands, living ona sailboat, sailing among and visiting different islands, and SCUBAdiving in different marine habitats and types of coral reefs. Duringthe school year, students met weekly to discuss assigned readings andresearch in different areas, including oceanography, Caribbean geology, geography, history and culture, marine biology and ecology, environmentalscience, diving physiology, and journal writing. The group gave apresentation about their trip during Spring Family Weekend. KaitlynnEvans ’07 had this to say about the trip: “Before this trip, I thought I knewwhat a hands-on experience was, but after going on the trip, I realizedhow far of an extent it could go to. What’s better than learning first-handabout something that you’d typically be taught about from a book? We allgot a more extensive understanding of marine ecology and a better, moreattached passion for it. As you would be learning about corals, fish, etc.,you had a motivation to learn as much as possible because you had justswam with that creature earlier or you would be diving and searching forit the next day. Class had a whole new meaning. This is what makesschool more than just a requirement of life.” Above left: Tana Polaski ’08gives the thumbs-up sign during an underwater adventure.MacMorran Scholars 2005-2006.
