spring sports highlightsBOYS’ VARSITY BASEBALLThe Rams had an incredible season, going 14-3 andwinning the Lakes Region Championship. Fourteen wins isone of the best baseball seasons in Tilton School’s history.All three losses were by one run, so the Rams were veryclose to an undefeated season. Tilton defeated NewHampton School, Holderness School, Brewster Academy,Kimball Union Academy and Vermont Academy twice, aswell as beating ISL powerhouse Thayer Academy 12-1.Sean Bahre ’06 pitched an amazing no-hitter and also hitthe key two-run homer in the championship, clinching a4-0 win against Vermont Academy. Bahre finished theseason with a lofty .489 batting average. The team’s offensewas incredible all year as the Rams outscored their opponentsby an incredible 11-3 average. Bahre and JeffCallahan ’08 both had four victories on the mound forTilton. Catcher Ben Grant-Roy ’06 led the Lakes RegionLeague in batting with a .569 average and earned the co-Most Valuable Player award with his excellent offensive anddefensive play. Senior Co-Captain Scott Hollingsworth alsoearned the co-MVP award by batting a career high .500(fourth in the league in hitting) while leading the league inRBI (26) and runs scored (30). Tyler Trott ’07 (.464average) had a terrific year and was named the winner ofthe Coaches’ Award for his spirited play. Senior Co-Captain Matt Johnson, Teddy White ’06 and Eric Davis’06 also ended their Tilton careers with great seasons.Sophomore Chad Davis and freshmen Eddie Dobrowolski,Cory Dudman and Eric Hollingsworth also contributed tothis championship season. Callahan was named captain fornext year’s team.BOYS’ JV BASEBALLThe Boys’ JV Baseball team accomplished a great dealduring the short spring season. With a young team,including six players with little-to-no baseball experience,the team had a great deal of growth and improvement. TheRams ended the season with hopes that many of our playerswill make a contribution to the varsity team in the nearfuture. Award winners were Matt Wrenn ’09 as the team’sMost Valuable Player and first-year player Phil Lee ’08 asthe Most Improved Player. Other highlights of the seasonincluded winning 2 out of 3 meetings with league rivalKimball Union Academy and a victory over local rivalWinnisquam Regional High School.VARSITY GOLFThe Varsity Golf team had an outstanding season,finishing the year with an overall record of 8-3 and a leaguerecord of 6-1. The team won both the regular season andthe tournament title for the Lakes Region. In the tournament,John Penny ’07 and Steven Kemp ’07 tied for firstplace by both shooting rounds of 78. Jason Rexinis ’06 andVince Johnston ’07 each added to an eventual 23-strokevictory over Holderness School by firing rounds of 83.Throughout the season, many members of the teamcontributed. Joe Delorey ’09, Dan Organ ’07, Matt Tam’06 and Alex Contis ’07 all helped the Rams to their firstwinning season in 10 years. The team had gone theprevious season without winning a match and scoring nohigher than a point. So congratulations to the “worst-tofirst”league champions, the Tilton School Rams Golf team.30 | Fall 2006
BOYS’ VARSITY LACROSSEThe Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse team had a season filled withmany exciting moments and great lacrosse games. While theteam did not have an opportunity to play for the LakesRegion Championship as they did in 2005, in many waysthis year’s team was more successful. The team finished withan 8-8 record. After suffering heartbreaking losses to CushingAcademy (8-5), Holderness School (7-5) and Kimball UnionAcademy (12-7), the Rams finished the year winning five ofthe last nine games. The team took some time to getcomfortable with each other, starting three players who hadnever played organized lacrosse, and 22 of the 26 players werenew to the program. By mid-season, the Rams enjoyedterrific victories over Vermont Academy (16-7), WinchendonSchool (11-5) and Proctor Academy (12-7) and a spectacularwin over Scarborough School (10-9). Leading the scoring thisyear were Dax Greene ’06 (25 goals, 18 assists) and KeithRosewell ’06 (25 goals, 10 assists). Both of these playersparticipated in the New England Prep School Senior All-Stargame, with Rosewell scoring a goal and earning an assist inthe game. The team is very excited about returning 10 playersto the 2006-2007 team, including Co-Captains goalie SeanFlynn ’07 (2nd Team All NNELL), attack Nick Marquis ’08(25 goals, 12 assists) and midfielder Dustin Paquette ’07 (1stTeam All NNELL). The team will miss the senior leadershipof Dax Greene (Keene State) and Keith Rosewell (SouthernNew Hampshire) and wishes them good luck with theircollege lacrosse careers.GIRLS’ VARSITY LACROSSEThe Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse team was small in number,but the girls’ improvement was enormous. The team’s recordat the end of the season was 5-6. The team captains thisseason were Erica Costanzo ’06 and Michelle Havey ’06.Some of the season’s highlights included winning gamesagainst North Yarmouth Academy 13-5 and NewHampton School 9-5.Abby Smith ’07, a new player this season, had a slightsetback with a knee injury early in the season. As she wasn’table to do a lot of running, Smith offered to take on theposition of goalkeeper. This was a huge sacrifice that Smithwas willing to make for her team. Smith worked hard everyday and improved a lot. That is why Smith was chosen asMost Improved Player.Jolene Rambone ’06 started the season not knowinganything about lacrosse, but she seemed excited every day tolearn more about the game and worked hard in every gameand practice. Rambone never said a negative word duringthe season; her attitude was always upbeat. She would cheeron her teammates when they needed it the most, from beingbehind and seeing the frustration in a game to the last toughsprint in practice. Rambone’s improvement throughout theseason was tremendous; by mid-point in the season, she wasa strong, consistent defender for the team. Rambonereceived the Coaches’ Award.BOYS’ JV LACROSSEThe Boys’ JV Lacrosse team finished the season with arecord of 6-6-1. Led by Co-Captains Ross Tine ’08 andStephen Zaharias ’07, the young squad out-scored theiropponents 84-64. Sophomore sensation Ryan Cunniffscored 37 goals with 14 assists to lead the attack andoffense with 51 points; he was voted the Most ValuablePlayer. Midfielder Tchunoo Kahng ’08 earned the MostImproved Player award, and defenseman Jordan Dow ’08was honored with the Coaches’ Award. The highlight ofthe season was the 7-6 triple overtime victory versus theDublin School. Tilton was down 6-5 with less than twominutes left in the fourth quarter, when junior Jeremy Pooltied it up, sending the two teams into overtime. With anexplosive effort and tremendous Rams pride, Cunniffscored the winning goal in the third regulation overtimeperiod. Head Coach Jon Rand looks forward to the 2006-2007 season.Fall 2006 | 31
