The city of Blashikdur is throbbing with activity onthis late summer day. You have decided to take awalk to the market. The end of martial law hasbrought back merchants from all over Tusmit andEkbir. Things look like they are slowly getting backto normal and commerce looks to take the destinyof Tusmit in hand once again. The threat of an elven attack still has not passeddespite the lifting of the martial law. The presenceof many units of the Tusman army is very visibleall-around town. Bricklayers, carpenters andmasons are all making a fortune fortifying the outerwalls, but also inner defenses, especially around thenobles’ quarter and the temples’ quarter. The market doesn’t rival most cities in the West, especially not the one in Vilayad. You hear priestsof Azor’alq preaching the forming of a Crusade inthe south of Tusmit to destroy the remnants of theWorldburners, led by their returned hero MunthirHaddad. Mullahs of the True Faith eye everyonewith stern eyes. Priests of Daoud preach contritionand beg for coins to fund their good works. Priestsof Mouqol serve as judges for many transactions. Afew worshippers of Zuoken or Xan Yae performmartial dances and mock unharmed combat for theamusement of the crowd. The Tusman army andWater Watchers have set up a few recruitingbooths. Not only Tusman are present, but Khund artisanshave begun to sell some of the silverworks theirforges are beginning to create. Perrenlandersmercenary companies offer the service of theirmen. The market is full of Ekbirrians from justacross the Blashikmund River here to buy or sellwares or farm goods.Development: If the PCs have been deemedtrustworthy by Ishmal al-Qadi and Gebril Al Mofiss, then continue with “Come with me”. Otherwisecontinue with “By order of the Caliph”Come with meSelect the PC who is most trustworthy, favoring Qadithen worshippers of the High Cleric first (either faith),the worshippers of the True Faith and then Baklunishand elves. If all else fails, contact the person who seemsthe most trustworthy.A voice with a pure Baklunish accent as spoken inEkbir whispers in your ear “I have an importantproposition for you. Meet me at the SnappingTurtle in an hour.” Looking around, you can see noone who could have whispered in your ear.Moussef al-Qadi used a sending spell to contact thePCs. If the PCs have met him (either in TUSInt3-06Exalted Pains or TUS4-04 My Big Fat TusmanWedding), they instantly recognize Moussef al-Qadi asthe bookworm assistant to Ishmal al-Qadi.If one of the PCs has the favor of Gebril Al Mofiss fromEKB5-03 La Proie pour l’ombre or if one of the PCs is amember of the Rautha Brotherhood, that PC iscontacted by Gebril Al Mofiss, not by Moussef al-Qadi.The PC immediately recognizes Gebril’s voice. The PCs can do what they want during that time. Referto Encounter One if they start looking for informationright away. Neither Ekbirrian nor Jadhim-Orem ispresent until the time of the meeting (they enter via adimension door spell). At the time of the meeting, when the PCs enter theSnapping Turtle, read or paraphrase the following.A servant boy approaches [PC contacted by thesending] and calls you by name. “Sir [Mam] pleasego to the room in the back. A group of priests wantto speak to you.”Before the PCs enter the room, Gebril, Moussef andIshmal have cast a series of protective spells in theroom. These spells are magic circle of vs chaos, magiccircle vs evil, two zone of truth [Will DC 20 & 19],discern lies, owl’s wisdom on both Qadi, invisibilitypurge, detect magic, detect scrying and spell resistance(SR 21) on the “Princess” (which you, the DM havealready guessed is Jadhim) and Ishmal (to allow him toobscure the truth to the PCs). For any save required, remember the magic circles may heighten the DC.Note that Gebril is the man in his 40s, Ishmal in his30s and Moussef is the bookworm.Opening the door, you can see there are fourpeople in the room. Two noble-looking priests cladin black and red stand in the center of the room. One of them is very tall, in his 40s, charismaticwith an aura of peace and tranquility. The other oneis in his 30s, hair cut short, very handsome andwith noble bearings. Sitting nearby is a bookishlookingpriest in his mid-20s dressed similarly, butin a more common manner. The final person is aveiled woman wearing nobles outfit, sitting at atable in the back.“Come in and be welcomed in our modest quarters.I am Ishmal al-Qadi, here are my associates, GebrilAl Mofiss al-Qadi and Moussef al-Qadi” he motionsto the seated man. “We all hail from Ekbir, let meassure you that we are most happy to have seen youare here in Blashikdur. Please, sit down, we haveEKB5-06/TUS5-07 The Ekbirrian Job Page 8
much to discuss.” Ishmal himself looks verynervous. Playing with his hands, he paces across theroom.“My friends, in the past, you have shown yourselvesto be trustworthy and loyal and I must ask you oncemore for your help… Moussef and I have promisedthe Princess here that we would escort her out ofEkbir to the safety of the Sheik’s Palace atDwur’Ayhand. A good friend of ours, the Sheik ofDihn has promised us assistance and protection.”“Normally this would not require your help, butthere are many, both in Tusmit and Ekbir whowould prefer that we never reach our destination.”“It goes without saying that secrecy is the keyelement here. If you agree to help us, we offer you alot. Royal thanks is not something to shrug upon.”“Before I continue further, I must ask if the causewe have presented to you is acceptable and just. Imust ask you to swear to keep the secret on yoursoul, on your honor and on the symbol of the HighCleric or the Restorer of Righteousness.”“The princess also insists her defenders be bound toher by means of magical spells. While I know youmyself, I must obey the command she has givenme. Of your own free will, do you accept the chargeof protecting our Royal Charge, at the peril of yourown life and to keep any detail of this missionsecret except to the people in this room, until suchtime that our Royal Charge be in the Sheik’s palacein Dwur’Ayhand?”Paladins (if they can somehow be identified), Qadi andMullah who take this oath are NOT forced to take onthe geas/quest. All other PCs MUST agree to the quest, otherwise, Ishmal thanks them and sees them out. Thematter at hand is too grave and pleading or trying toforce favors or influence on him will not make himbudge from his position. He admits that he andMoussef have submitted to the same quest, back inEkbir (true).Anyone asking for Sense Motive checks [DC 20+APL]for Ishmal’s speech should be given one. Successindicates that Ishmal is not saying everything heknows, but that he doesn’t seem to be outright lying. Ifchallenged, Ishmal brushes it off and changes subject. If pressed too hard, Ishmal thanks the PCs and seesthem out.If any PCs present have la faveur de Gebril Al Mofiss orthe favor of the Rautha Brotherhood, Gebril Al Mofissadds:“The Brotherhood has decided to help this princess. We have the same enemies and as they say, theenemy of my enemy is my friend! The Storm Ridersof the sinister Keyn Ashir are after us, and we musthelp each other. This is a delicate mission requiringcourage and discretion. We have great need of yourassistance in these difficult times.”Once the PCs all accept and are bound by the geas ortheir word, Ishmal continues. If they refuse, Ishmallooks saddened and escorts them out. Continue withBy Order of the Caliph.Ishmal looks relieved “I’m sorry I must resort tothese kinds of methods, but safety and secrecy goand in hand. We will travel north, through theUdgru Forest, and from there into Dihn and thento Dwur’Ayhand.”Allow the PCs to ask questions.Speaking to the princess, Ishmal does not allow thePCs to interact with the princess directly. He statesthat her rank does not allow her to interact with them(if any PCs belong to the Noblesse royale of Ekbir,Ishmal invokes her shyness.). If the PCs insist, theprincess says a few words, thanking them for their helpand that she will reward them greatly for their gooddeeds, but does so looking annoyed. The Udgru isn’t safe: Ishmal replies that they wereassured safe passage by Elohir himself and that theelves should not cause any problem.Who is the Princess? She doesn’t want her identityrevealed at this time. Walls have ears, you know andthough we have protected ourselves, diviners acrossTusmit and Ekbir would really like to know. Why us? Because I know you to be reliable and thatyou will do what is best for Tusmit.Who comes with us? Moussef and I will accompanyyou. We will attend to all the needs of the Princess.Though on occasion, we might be able to assist youwith a spell or two. But we must insist that our duty isto provide the princess with any spell she requires.Gebril will not come with us. He must return urgentlyto Ekbir for the good of the Rautha Brotherhood (buthe won’t say anything more).Who is after the Princess? Some of the worse noblesin Tusmit and their allies in Ekbir do not want us toreach Dwur’Ayhand. The Princess has someinformation she MUST share with the Sheik of Dihn. The Storm Riders of Dezbat, lead by Keyn Ashirhimself, have received the Pasha’s blessing to operateEKB5-06/TUS5-07 The Ekbirrian Job Page 9
