WATER COOPERATION, SUSTAINABILITY AND POVERTY ERADICATIONAnalysis System (IFAS) course was realized in collaboration withthe International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management, the UNESCO Jakarta Office and LIPI. The objective is to enablegovernment agencies to use appropriate software (IFAS) for floodforecasting and warning systems that lead to increasing capacityin managing water resources under climatic variability and relatedextreme phenomena. The course entails the provision of nationaldigital geographic information system data for the creation of modelsat the target river basin as well as local hydrological/hydraulic datafor run-off analyses and model validation.Demo site for community-based water managementThe objective of the demo site for ecohydrology development is toact as a field station for the implementation of ecohydrology conceptsin the field. The demo site ecohydrology campaign is expected tobe significant in socializing the sustainable management of waterresources in accordance with the concept of ecohydrology. It will alsoserve as a natural laboratory for the future development of ecohydrology, especially as a tropical Indonesian concern. Ecohydrology demosite development in Indonesia will be directed to a location demo siterepresenting the concept of sustainable water resources managementin several different groups, namely an ecohydrology demo site for thecommunity-based management of water resources.Community is an important factor in supporting the sustainablemanagement of water resources. Community groups are expected tobe agents of change in an effort commonly referred to as integratedwater resources management. They provide a community that is in a strongposition in society, led by a Kiai (a respected Islamic leader). Membersof this community are generally role models in society, and can beexpected to transfer knowledge outside the communityrelatively easily through personal communication.• The pesantren generally covers primary to seniorhigh school levels of education, and the demo siteprovides one way to introduce education aboutwater resources in these schools.• There are about 26,000 pesantren in Indonesia.Although the exact number has not been recordedwith certainty, the overall estimated pesantrenin the country could empower up to 20 millionpeople. The success of socialization and thecampaign for sustainable management of waterresources in the school community demo sitelocation will be used as a model for other Islamiccommunities and, ultimately, the general public.Pesantren Ar-Risalah in the Kudat district was selectedas one of the locations for demo site development. This has been done in 2012 and activity will continuein 2013. The Pesantren Ar-Risalah project involvedapproximately 2,700 people consisting of boardingstudents, teachers and support personnel who aremostly local people.Water resources used to meet the daily needs ofthe boarders come from groundwater and river waterin Cijantung. Groundwater is used by means of artesianwells, while the river water goes through simpleprocessing tanks for coagulation, flocculation andfiltration. The quality of the river water used needsattention, to make sure it meets quality standards forthe allotment of domestic activities such as hygiene andsanitation. Sewage disposal systems in boarding schoolsare still open, or there is open dumping in the environ-Image: APCELocal people studying water management[ 189 ]
