KEI was established bythe Korean Government in 1993 as a public research institute.It has been at the heart of development of the environmentalagenda in Korea for the past 20 years. As part of the KoreaCouncil of Economic and Social Research Institutes underthe Prime Minister’s Office, KEI strives to be a world-classenvironment policy research institute pioneering a sustainablesociety. Through cutting-edge research and rigorous analysis,KEI is dedicated to providing future-oriented environmentpolicy research that can benefit humanity. KEI’s researchprogrammes focus on environmental economics, climatechange and air quality, environmental assessment, waterenvironment, natural resource conservation, land planning,resource circulation and environmental health.Building on its 20 years of experience in environment policyresearch, KEI has taken its work to a new level through internationaljoint research and partnerships. With a growing recognitionof the need for enhanced collaboration and coordinationbeyond the national level, KEI launched its GlobalStrategy Center (GSC) in June 2010 to extend its bodyof work to regional and global levels. GSC works asthe main implementing arm of KEI’s global partnershipand outreach activities, focusing especially on technicalcooperation and knowledge-sharing with developingcountries. It is intended that GSC will become a sustainabledevelopment cooperation hub, which will serve asa global gateway for KEI and provide a platform forjoint research and knowledge-sharing.Research activities: water resourcesIn recent years, the issue of water security has beendiscussed on the global political agenda, earningattention from national governments at the highestlevel. Recent events and discussions have highlightedthat water security issues have implications for developmentand poverty eradication.
