Penn women’s center<br />

The Penn Women’s Center’s mission is to understand and<br />

address the evolving needs of all women at the University of<br />

Pennsylvania, redress gender inequity and, in so doing, support<br />

and advance women’s personal and professional development<br />

and empower them to reach their fullest potential . We<br />

sponsor programs on career development, stress management,<br />

parenting, sexual violence prevention, health and wellness<br />

alongside events highlighting women writers, activists, artists<br />

and political and professional leaders . We play an advocacy role<br />

regarding issues of gender equity, health, childcare, workplace<br />

discrimination, domestic and sexual violence, and mental<br />

health . Located in the heart of the campus, the Penn Women’s<br />

Center offers the perfect space for women to study, relax, host<br />

meetings, and workshops or team up for civic engagement<br />

projects . The Center has a fully-equipped nursing room, a film<br />

and book library, a TV lounge, wireless internet access and<br />

assorted meeting rooms .<br />

Athletic facilities<br />

The University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Recreation<br />

offers the opportunity for the Penn Community to participate<br />

in intramural sports, open recreation, adult recreation classes,<br />

sport clubs, fitness programs, and special interest programs .<br />

The facilities website reviews athletic services offered at Penn .<br />

The Pottruck Center (across the street from Jon M . Huntsman<br />

Hall) is one of the main venues at the University . It offers a<br />

range of facilities including fitness equipment, pools, and<br />

climbing walls . Hours are convenient for students . For more<br />

Student health<br />

The Student Health Service is located at 3535 Market St .,<br />

Suite 100 . Hours are available on the SHS website at:<br />

. The Student Health<br />

Service (SHS) has integrated online scheduling for appointments<br />

on the main page of the site . To schedule an appointment<br />

by phone, call 215-746-3535 . We will try to accommodate<br />

you with the next available appointment whenever<br />

possible . In some instances, you will be able to schedule an<br />

appointment for the same day . If you have an urgent problem<br />

and need special arrangements for care, a nurse may help to<br />

arrange for an appropriate evaluation If you choose not to use<br />

on-line or phone scheduling, you may also come directly to<br />

SHS to make an appointment . You will be offered any sameday<br />

appointments that are available . If there are no same-day<br />

appointments we will offer you the next available that works<br />

with your schedule . If you have an urgent issue we truly try our<br />

best to have you seen as soon as possible . Sometimes patients<br />

will have a nurse evaluate them to provide care while they wait<br />

until the next available provider appointment (which could be<br />

later that day or the next day) .<br />

Students with illnesses requiring urgent or emergency<br />

treatment may obtain care at a local Emergency Room . They<br />

may also call the Student Health provider on-call for phone<br />

consultation . This provider may give medical advice over<br />

the phone, or may decide that the student should seek emergency<br />

medical attention . We recommend students go to the<br />

Emergency Department at HUP (1st floor Silverstein Building<br />

on 34th Street) . The Student Health provider on-call can be<br />

reached by calling 215-746-3535 and connecting to the hospital<br />

operator .<br />

health Insurance<br />

All full-time students are required to carry health insurance<br />

to cover services beyond those offered at the Student Health<br />

Service . Students may either enroll in the Penn insurance plan<br />

or carry insurance equivalent in coverage to the Penn plan .<br />

SHS maintains a website at: with information about health insurance . For<br />

further information, call the Student Health Insurance Office<br />

at 215 .746 .3535, or stop at the office located in 3535 Market<br />

St ., Suite 100, Room B101 .<br />

Dental care<br />

The Dental Care Center is located at Robert Schattner Center,<br />

240 South 40th Street where faculty from the Dental School<br />

provides care at fees comparable to private practice . Hours<br />

are Monday through Saturday from 8 a .m . until 5 p .m . Call<br />

215 .898 .4615 for an appointment . Other locations are also<br />

available . Dental care is not covered by the Student Health<br />

Service or the medical insurance plan . However, the University<br />

offers an optional dental insurance policy . For information on<br />

dental insurance, see the Penn Student Insurance section of<br />

the Student Health Service website at: or call 215 .746 .3535 .<br />

The Office of health Promotion and Education<br />

The Office of Health Promotion and Education (formerly<br />

OHE) provides harm reduction and public health promotion<br />

services to the campus which include data collection and analysis,<br />

educational workshops, health awareness events and campaigns,<br />

academic courses, trainings and consultations . In addition,<br />

we provide training and consultation to the SAC-funded<br />

peer health groups Active Minds, CogWell, FLASH, GUIDE,<br />

RAP-Line and STAPH and Clinical Services in Stress<br />

Reduction and WholeBreath Smoking Cessation . See<br />
