PARTNERS IN INDUSTRYThe status reported below is of November 2003. The newpartner voestalpine Bahnsysteme GmbH of Stage 4 hasalso been included. For each partner the first year of involvementwith charmec is indicated (and before that bybilateral agreement with the railway mechanics group atChalmers Solid Mechanics).Abetong Teknik AB (1995 and 1988)Manufacturer of prefabricated and pretensioned concretestructural components with 600 employees includingsubsidiary and sister companies in Sweden and abroad.Headquartered in Växjö. Belongs to the Heidelberg-Cement Group. Areas of interest are the design andmanufacture of railway sleepers fitted with fasteningsand pads for the rails. Of particular interest are toolsuseful for the identification of loads on sleepers installedin track and for the structural analysis and design ofsleepers for main lines and turnouts. Also of interest isthe proportion of noise emitted by the sleepers. Themain buyers of sleepers are state railways and railwaycontractors. A total of around 3 million Abetong sleepersare produced annually in fully and partly owned andlicensed sleeper plants at about 25 locations around theworld.Banverket (1995 and 1990)The Swedish National Rail Administration, abbreviatedbv, is the country’s infrastructure authority and managerwith a total of 8000 employees. charmec’s partner is theheadquarters at Borlänge with 400 employees. charmecalso co-operates with some regional offices. Areas of interestare the design, construction and maintenance of allsorts of track structures for high availability and reliability.Of particular interest are the wear and corrugationof the railhead (calling for maintenance grinding) andthe overall degradation of track structure. It is especiallyimportant to understand and predict the influence on thetrack of proposed higher speeds and increased axle loads.Of primary importance to Banverket is also researchconcerning vibration, noise and safety.Bombardier Transportation Sweden AB (2000)Bombardier Transportation is a global manufacturerof equipment for railway operations and a provider ofmaintenance and service of rolling stock. The rangeof products includes passenger coaches, total transit systems, locomotives, freight cars, propulsion systems andrail control solutions. The total number of employeesis 36,000, of whom 2000 work in Sweden. The office inVästerås is one of the main engineering hubs for thedivision Intercity Trains. Also located on this site arethe global Centres of Competence for Acoustics andVibration and for Vehicle Dynamics. Areas of interestare focused on wheel-rail interaction and its effects onride dynamics, wheel wear, wheel damage, and rollingnoise. Also of interest are the transmission of wheel-railgenerated vibration into the bogie and car body, contactforce identification, and the application of active controlsystems for enhanced comfort.Duroc Rail AB (1997)A company within the Duroc group with a large shareof the Swedish railway wheelset maintenance marketin which it carries out traditional turning of wheels etc. However, the company’s development work focuses ontreatment techniques for the running surfaces of wheelsand rails. Duroc Rail is locatedin Luleå with 25 employees. Areas of interest in theco-operation with charmec are general issues relating towheel/rail contact and in particular to the surface properties, binding conditions and life spans of laser-treatedwheel treads and rail heads.Green Cargo AB (2000)State-owned Swedish logistic company with headquartersin Solna and with 3700 employees and an annual turnoverof about meuro 700.
