The thirdmeeting was held in Germany at the research centre inMinden and the maintenance shop in Nuremberg on25-26 September 2000, and the fourth meeting in Swedenin Luleå and Malmberget on 11-13 June 2001. The fifthmeeting took place in Germany in Munich on 3-4 September2002. charmec attended all these meetings.Abetong Teknik’s symposiumOn 29 May 2001, Abetong Teknik organized a symposiumin railway mechanics for their worldwide licenseesand other business partners. About 50 people fromAustria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, theNetherlands, Norway, South Africa, South Korea,Sweden and Switzerland attended. charmec’s researcherscontributed with seven lectures. The symposium washeld at Kungälv, Sweden.CRC in AustraliaA co-operative Research Centre for Railway Engineeringand Technologies, abbreviated Rail crc, was startedin Australia in 2001 with Professor Dudley Roach ofCentral Queensland University in Rockhampton asChief Executive Officer. He visited charmec on 4-5October 2001 for discussions about the organization ofour Centre. Later Roger Lundén was appointed memberof the Technology Advisory Committee for Rail crc.On 5-6 August <strong>2003</strong>, Roger Lundén visited Rail crc inAustralia to take part in an evaluation of the standingof that Centre regarding quality and the relevance of itsresearch programme.Six Australian universities and five railway enterprisesparticipate in Rail crc which was established and is supportedunder the Australian Government’s CooperativeResearch Centres Program. The mission is formulatedas follows: “To deliver valuable research, knowledge andinnovation to the railway industry and its stakeholdersusing an internationally collaborative approach”. A cooperationbetween Rail crc and charmec is foreseen.Heavy haulInternational Heavy Haul Associationcharmec’s work to support the upgrading to 30 tonneaxle load of the Iron Ore Line (Malmbanan/Ofotbanen)in northern Sweden and Norway has continued duringStage 3, see the charmec <strong>Triennial</strong> <strong>Report</strong> from Stage 2,page 44. These presentations have notbeen listed under the projects.Nordic Rail fairAt the 4th and 5th Nordic Rail fairs at the Elmia premisesin Jönköping on 2-4 October 2001 and 7-9 October<strong>2003</strong>, charmec shared a stand with kth Railway Group,vinnova and the Swedish Transport and CommunicationsResearch Board (vti). Our research projectswere displayed on wall plates, four seminars were heldat each of the fairs (not listed under the projects) andprinted material was distributed. Several valuable contactswith the railway industry have been (re)establishedat Nordic Rail.
