INTRODUCTIONCHARMEC is the acronym for CHAlmers RailwayMEChanics. This Centre of Excellence, or CompetenceCentre (in Swedish: Kompetenscentrum), was establishedat Chalmers University of Technology in 1995.The formal agreement was made at the Swedish NationalBoard for Industrial and Technical Development (nutek)in Stockholm on 7 July 1995. Joint funding of Stage 1(1 July 1995 – 30 June 1997) with a sum of msek 20.5 wasthen agreed upon between nutek, the University andthe four industrial partners Abetong Teknik, AdtranzWheelset, Banverket and sj. On a small scale, researchin railway mechanics had started at Chalmers SolidMechanics as early as 1987 when a first bilateral contractbetween Bengt Åkesson of that Department and ÅkeHassellöf of Adtranz Wheelset (then Sura Traction,later abb Sura Traction and Adtranz Wheelset, andnow Lucchini Sweden) was signed.charmec’s Stage 2 (1 July 1997 – 30 June 2000), whichwas run with a budget of msek 59.6, was agreed upon ata meeting in Stockholm on 10 October 1997. Cardo Rail,Duroc and Inexa Profil then joined as new industrialpartners.The agreement on charmec’s Stage 3 (1 July 2000 –30 June 2003) was made at nutek’s office in Stockholmon 22 June 2000 with a budget of msek 69.3, of whichmsek 43.0 was in the form of cash. In addition to the previousseven members a new member, DaimlerChryslerRail Systems Sweden (formerly Adtranz Sweden, nowBombardier Transportation Sweden), joined the IndustrialInterests Group.At the end of this report a brief outline is given ofcharmec’s Stage 4, which runs 1 July 2003 – 30 June 2006with a total budget of msek 63.4, see page 79. sl Infrateknik(a subsidiary of Storstockholms Lokaltrafik/Stockholm Urban Transit Authority) and voestalpineBahnsysteme (Austrian rail and switch manufacturer)joined as new industrial partners (sl Infrateknik alreadyfrom 1 January 2003). The drop in the budget is explainedby the fact that vinnova’s msek 6.0 per annumis only paid during the first two years of Stage 4. VISION AND GOALSBOARD AND DIRECTORcharmec is a strong player among world-leading researchcentres in railway mechanics and contributes significantlytowards lower production, maintenance, operational andenvironmental costs and to the overall improved safetyand quality of railway transportation. The University andthe Industry collaborate in realizing this vision.charmec successfully unites the identification, formulationand solution of industrially relevant problemswith high academic standards and internationally viableresearch. charmec disseminates its research results andcontributes to industrial development and growth inSweden and abroad.charmec maintains an up-to-date body of knowledgeand preparedness which can be put to use at short noticein the event of unexpected damage or accident duringrailway operations in Sweden or abroad. The scientificlevel and the practical usefulness of charmec’s academicand industrial achievements are such that a continuedlong-term support to charmec is profitable for theGovernment, the University and the Industry.Among charmec’s concrete goals are the nationaltraining and examination of Licentiates and Doctorsand the international presentation and publication ofresearch results. Fundamental and applied researchprojects are integrated. charmec’s industrial partnersare supported in the implementation of solutions reachedand the use of tools developed. charmec attracts ableand motivated doctoral candidates and senior researchers.The licentiates and doctors examined from charmecconstitute attractive employees for the railway industryand associated r&d organizations.charmec’s research focuses on the interaction ofvarious mechanical components. Analytical, numericaland experimental tools are developed and applied.
