VISION AND GOALSBOARD AND DIRECTORcharmec is a strong player among world-leading researchcentres in railway mechanics and contributes significantlytowards lower production, maintenance, operational andenvironmental costs and to the overall improved safetyand quality of railway transportation. The University andthe Industry collaborate in realizing this vision.charmec successfully unites the identification, formulationand solution of industrially relevant problemswith high academic standards and internationally viableresearch. charmec disseminates its research results andcontributes to industrial development and growth inSweden and abroad.charmec maintains an up-to-date body of knowledgeand preparedness which can be put to use at short noticein the event of unexpected damage or accident duringrailway operations in Sweden or abroad. The scientificlevel and the practical usefulness of charmec’s academicand industrial achievements are such that a continuedlong-term support to charmec is profitable for theGovernment, the University and the Industry.Among charmec’s concrete goals are the nationaltraining and examination of Licentiates and Doctorsand the international presentation and publication ofresearch results. Fundamental and applied researchprojects are integrated. charmec’s industrial partnersare supported in the implementation of solutions reachedand the use of tools developed. charmec attracts ableand motivated doctoral candidates and senior researchers. The licentiates and doctors examined from charmecconstitute attractive employees for the railway industryand associated r&d organizations.charmec’s research focuses on the interaction ofvarious mechanical components. Analytical, numericaland experimental tools are developed and applied. Newand innovative materials, designs and controls are explored. The life-cycle optimizing of parts and systemsfor track structure and running gear is intended to resultin the slower degradation of ballast and embankment, increased life of sleepers and pads, improved trackalignment stability, reduced rail and wheel wear, lesstendency to rolling contact fatigue of rails and wheels, lower levels of vibration and noise in trains, tracks andtheir surroundings, and better systems for the monitoringand operation of brakes, bearings, wheels etc.Jan-Eric Sundgren, President of Chalmers University ofTechnology, in consultation with the Industrial InterestsGroup and nutek, appointed the following as membersof the Board of the Competence Centre charmec duringStage 3 (decision dated 12 September 2000):Björn Paulsson(chairman)Stefan WestbergHenrik TengstrandLennart NordhallMats SvenssonMats ÖnnerOlof NilssonHugo von BahrStefan ÖstlundHans AnderssonBanverket HeadquartersAbetong TeknikAdtranz Sweden (now BombardierTransportation Sweden)Adtranz Wheelset (nowLucchini Sweden)Cardo bsi Rail (now sab wabco)DurocInexa Profilsj (now TrainTech EngineeringSweden)The Royal Institute ofTechnology (kth)sp Swedish National Testingand Research InstituteLater during Stage 3, Ulf Bergstedt of Duroc replacedMats Önner (2001-04-25) and Olof Nilsson of InexaProfil left the Board (2002-04-30).Professor Roger Lundén of Chalmers Solid Mechanicswas appointed Director of the Competence Centre from1 April 1997.
