SPECIAL EVENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS (cont’d)Swedish Mechanics DaysA two-day conference named “Svenska Mekanikdagar”is arranged every second year and circulates amongSwedish technical universities and institutes. Several ofcharmec’s researchers have presented their results atthe conferences. These contributions are not listed underthe projects.Workshops at SmögenTwo international workshops on statistical analysis infatigue were arranged at Smögen on the Swedish WestCoast by the Stochastic Centre in Gothenburg. charmec’sAnders Ekberg and Elena Kabo participated togetherwith other researchers from Italy, Japan, Sweden andthe uk. On 14-25 August 2000 the topic concerned theapplication of stochastic geometry and the theory ofextremes. On 19-23 August 2002 subjects treated includedthe fatigue impact of clusters of material defectsof varying sizes and types.Workshop in BresciaThe workshop “Rolling Contact Fatigue: Applicationsand Developments” was held on 15 November 2002at the University of Brescia, Italy. Anders Ekberg andElena Kabo from charmec were invited as internationalspeakers together with representatives from Italian universities, industries and administrations. A total of 14papers were presented on load spectra definition, stressand strain evaluation, crack propagation mechanismsand rolling contact fatigue sensitivity analysis. The workshopwas organized by Professor Giorgio Donzella fromUniversità degli studi di Brescia and Professor StefanoBeretta from Politecnico di Milano. In connection with the workshop Anders Ekberg gavea four-hour lecture on rolling contact fatigue for graduateand doctoral students at the University of Brescia on14 November 2002. The lecture was videotaped for educationalpurposes. See further under project mu9.Textbook on fatigue and fractureTore Dahlberg and Anders Ekberg have written a textbook(in English) related to the type of problems studiedat charmec. The book is presently being used in bothintramural and extramural courses for undergraduatestudents and engineers employed in industry.Tore Dahlberg and Anders Ekberg: Failure, fracture, fatigue– an introduction, Studentlitteratur, Lund (Sweden) 2002,ISBN 91-44-02096-1, 356 ppFront cover ofFailure, fracture, fatigue – anintroductionOverview article in Vehicle System Dynamicscharmec’s Jens Nielsen was invited to present a keynotelecture in August 2003 at the 18th iavsd Symposium,Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and Tracks, in Japan, and to compile, along with co-authors, an overviewarticle for the periodical Vehicle System Dynamics withthe title “Train-track interaction and mechanisms ofirregular wear on wheel and rail surfaces”. The article(listed under project ts5) comprises 52 pages and contains159 references. Causes, consequences and remediesare discussed for (i) short-pitch rail corrugation on tangenttracks and large radius curves, (ii) wheel corrugationas caused by tread braking, and (iii) wheel polygonalization. The state-of-the-art in modelling of dynamic traintrackinteraction in conjunction with prediction of irregularwear is reviewed.Graduate course in contact mechanicsEight of charmec’s doctoral candidates have taken agraduate course in contact mechanics given during autumn2002 by Roger Lundén assisted by Anders Ekbergand Jonas Ringsberg. Several applications related to thewheel/rail interface. Rolling contact induced deformationsand stresses, tribology and fretting were treated.Special issue of FFEMSRoger Lundén was invited to be Guest Editor of a SpecialIssue of the international scientific journal Fatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures (ffems). The German accident involving a broken wheel and derailmentat Eschede on 3 June 1998 on the Hannover –Hamburg Line, see below, and the British accident with72
