PROGRAMME AREAS CHARMEC STAGE 3According to the agreement of 22 June 2000, the CompetenceCentre charmec should work within five overallprogramme areas during Stage 3, as set out below. Thechoice of projects within each area is decided on by theBoard of the Centre. These programme areas are thesame as those during Stage 2.Programme area 1Interaction of train and track(Samverkan Tåg/Spår, TS)A rolling train is a mobile dynamic system that interacts, via the wheel/rail interface, with the stationary trackstructure, which in its turn is a dynamic system. Thisinteraction is a key area within all railway mechanicsresearch. The mechanisms behind vibrations, noise andwear depend on the interplay of the rolling train and thetrack structure. The activities of this programme areaare directed towards being able to better understand, model and predict the dynamic interaction for differenttypes and conditions of trains, tracks and operations.Theoretical, numerical and experimental methods areto be used.Programme area 2Vibrations and noise(Vibrationer och Buller, VB)A considerable reduction in vibrations and noise fromrailway traffic seems to be of crucial importance for thefuture acceptance of this type of transportation. Thegeneration and spreading of vibrations in trains, tracksand environment and the emission of noise are phenomenathat are both theoretically and experimentallydifficult to approach. The activities of this programmearea are directed towards being able to better understandthe underlying mechanisms. Advanced analytical andnumerical tools and well-planned laboratory and in-fieldexperiments and measurements are required. The goalis to establish a basis for effective modifications andcountermeasures against vibrations and noise in trainsand tracks and in their surroundings.Programme area 3Materials and maintenance(Material och Underhåll, MU)Suitable and improved materials for axles, wheels, rails, pads, sleepers, ballast and embankment are a prerequisitefor good mechanical performance, reduced wear, lower maintenance costs and increased technical/economiclife of the components mentioned. The activitiesof this programme area are directed towards analysingexisting materials and developing new materials. Thereshould be created a knowledge base for the rationalmaintenance of train and track components. Co-operationbetween several different competences is requiredfor this research.Programme area 4Systems for monitoring and operation(System för övervakning och Drift, SD)Brakes, bearings, axles, wheels and bogies are importantmechanical components of a train in what concerns itsoperational economy and safety. As to both passengerand freight trains, there seems to be a large potentialfor improvements. New components and new ways ofimproving and supplementing existing functions shouldbe studied. A systems approach is emphasized and thework is performed in a cross-disciplinary environmentdrawing on several different academic and industrialcompetences. Among them are solid mechanics, machineelements, signal analysis, control theory and computerengineering and mechatronics.Programme area 5Parallel EU projects(Parallella EU-projekt, EU)During Stage 3, Chalmers University of Technology hasbeen a partner, through charmec, in several eu (EuropeanUnion) projects in railway mechanics within theFifth Framework Programme. Negotiations about ourparticipation in eu projects within the Sixth FrameworkProgramme have been started. All these projects areclosely related to charmec’s ongoing research in theprogramme areas 1, 2, 3 and 4. charmec contributes tothe financing of the eu projects. It should be observedthat the legal entity signing the eu contracts on our partis Chalmers University of Technology.Programme area 6Parallel Special Projects(Parallella SpecialProjekt, SP)At their meeting on 10 September 2002, the charmecBoard decided to gather and list a number of our bilateralagreements and separate research and developmentprojects in railway mechanics under the aboveheading. The items of Stage 3 have beensp1 Lucchini Sweden ab (bilateral agreement)sp2 Noise from Swedish railwayssp3 Track force measurements on x2sp4 vae ag (bilateral agreement)sp5 voestalpine Schienen GmbH (bilateral agreement)sp6 Development of a quiet railsp7 Lateral track stabilityThis programme area contains both short-term and longtermprojects of which several have been established forthe industrial implementation of charmec research results.10
