After on even first quarter, C<strong>au</strong>lfieldsettled down to the task , and withJohn Nation starring in the centre,turned on a brilliant display in the secondquarter to kick six goals againstBallarat's one. From then on we kept upthe pressure to eventually win the gameby ten goals.After our success against Ballarat, wemet SWinburne, who had beaten us ina practice game at home. However, inthe first half we reproduced our bestfootball and at half time held a commandinglead which apparently shockedSwinburne bec<strong>au</strong>se in the second halfthey fought back well , c<strong>au</strong>sing us a fewanxious moments, but we managed tohold them off to win by two goals.In the last game against Melbourne,we hod to play two men short a s severalplayers were unavailable bec<strong>au</strong>se of illness.However, this did not worry us asit produced some fast open footba lionour forward line and we won quite comfortablyby six goals, on excellent finishto the season.Right throughout the season thewhole team played with great spirit andas a result we lost two games and wonthree, to finish third in the competitionbehind Footscray and Geelong, on exceedinglygood performance.*• SENIOR CRICKETAfter a mediocre season this yea r,C<strong>au</strong>lfield can look forword to ne xt seasonwith great confidence of regainingthe premiership we lost this year.Our first match was ag ainst Swinburneat C<strong>au</strong>lfield Park. Swinburne wonthe toss a nd sent C<strong>au</strong>lfield in to bat.Disa ster st ruc k early as McCoy wasbowled first boll of the match; howevera brilliant 2nd wicket stand of 129 runsbetween Baird and Davidson put C<strong>au</strong>lfieldin on olmost unbeatable position.At the compulsory closure C<strong>au</strong>lfieldwere 3 for 137. Swinburne were thendismissed for 114. Successfu l wickettakersfor C<strong>au</strong>lfield were Gould, Clarkeand Flood.The second match wa s played againstFootscray at the Seddon Oval. Finalscores were C<strong>au</strong>lfield 9 for 95 v. Foots ­cray 3 for 105. McCoy (29 ), Munce(17) and Clarke (17 n .o.) were our rungetters.The final match was played againstthe Melbourne Technical College at theschool ground. We were defeated by 28runs after a grim struggle. Norm Watson,playing in his first match with theteam, captured 5 Melbourne wickets for18 runs, including the hat trick.Our team, though not as st rong as theprevious year, was well balanced andcontained many promising cricketers.Those who played with the side were:­Alan Baird: Capable captain and re­Iioble open ing bot.Tom Gould: Right-arm opening fastbowler. Useful toil end batsman andvice-captain of the team.John Flood: Only all-rounder of clo ss.Could always be relied upon either withbot or boll.Frank Hammill: Opening fa st bowlerwith a low trajectory. Did not displaytrue form until lost match .Ted McCoy: Most talented batsmanin the side . Excellent fieldsman.Don . Gresswell: Capable wicketkeeperwithout a sundry against hisname.Jim Ellis: Fast right arm bowler andhard h itting batsman.Newcomers who played for C<strong>au</strong>lfieldfor the first time were:­Lindsay Davidson: Stylish batsmanand slow bowler.Peter Mudge: Right hand batsman.Excellent fieldsman.Don Clarke: Opening fast bowler andgo od tail end batsman.Norm. Watson: Damaging right-armspin bowler.Borry Munce: Fast right-arm bowlerand useful bat.Brian Broughton: Right-arm s lowbowler. Real asset to the side.46
