In this context, SriVenkateswara Veterinary University located atTirupati and research station at Palamaner arealso contributing to scientific informationneeds of the farmers in the district throughtransfer of technology. From these resultsit could be inferred that it was a good signthat majority of the respondents were in themedium category of socio-economic statusand extension agencies should concentratemore on those farmers whose socio-economiccategory was low and appropriate initiativesmay be taken up to improve their livelihoods.The findings are in line with the results of Raju(2003) and Raju et al. (2006) who reportedthat majority of the respondents were inmedium to low socio-economic statuscategory.It was also observed that, majority (57.78per cent) of the dairy farmers had mediumfollowed by high (24.44 per cent) perceptiontowards privatisation of veterinary services. Itcould imply that they are ready to pay for theservices. As it was being a commerciallyprofitable farming, high technology oriented,services are species-specific and providelivelihood security to the farmers resulting inthe services competent enough to meet theirspecific needs and requirements.Farmers' preferences on veterinaryservices suitable for privatisation in dairyfarming were also studied and are presentedin Table 5.Journal of Rural Development, Vol. 30, No. 4, October - December : 2011
