Journal of Rural Development, Vol. 30, No. (4) pp. 501 - 505Book NIRD, Hyderabad. Reviews 501BOOK REVIEWSGlobalization, India and the World,P.K Agarwal and R.K. Bhatt, Concept PublishingCompany, New Delhi, 2011 (198 pages).Globalization influenced the presentWorld most. It removes barriers and has thepotential to enrich everyone in the World, particularly the poor-Said Noble LaureateJoseph Stiglitz. Based on the view, the authorsstarted their arguement from workers andfarmers' point of view on globalization.According to Fiedel Castro of Cuba, variouscultured impact will attack the globalizationand will finish the demand of globalization.Kashmir is the classical example of culturalattack on trade by India and Pakistan. Regionaland local issues will be more important andthereby, regional and local cultures are moreeasily unified than the global ones as they havebeen easily interacting with ease for manycenturies.Media is the happiest class in theglobalization. Newspaper, magazine orbestseller world and franchise business willsuffice. Instead of encouraging morality andhonesty, the media will indulge in spoiling ofthe minds of young generations and theworking people alike. As far as judiciary and Legal Professionare concerned, solicitors, advocates, lawyersor attorneys are the beneficiaries. Corruptionwill eat into the vitals of judiciary too.Bureaucracy are the white elephants.Bureaucracy and the political elite haveultimately give into the globalization.Women are another group which is thesufferer during the globalization. Womenlabourers are another class which is sufferer.Women become more than males in jobs, thehusbands become mentally sick at home.Young boys and girls have thrills in their lifestyle, have new devices to communicate andto get educated. Mobile sets get sosophisticated that only one device can fulfilltheir all requirements, get high salaries in startupjobs.Historical perspective of globalization isthat the package of economic reforms wasbased on constitutional framework, Industrialdislocation and programme of economicreforms. The main objective of the economicgrowth is to maximise the production of theconsumer goods and services in the society, which increases the economic welfare of thepeople. The people of India stand for secularcredentials. Legal reform is a strong instrumentto ensure equitable justice. All villages in the country are beingconnected by road network under the mostambitious programmes like Prime MinisterSadak Rojgar Yojana, NREGP for ruraldevelopment.Being predominantly agricultureeconomy, liberalisation should precedeimplementation of land reforms. The farminglabourers are most vulnerable section of thesociety. This group does not have the collectivebargaining instrument. The rural poor are givena semblance of justice otherwise all gains ofliberalisation or globalisation will be run overby this hungry army throwing all monumentsand calculation of globalisation in the dustbin.Consequently, food security is the toppriority concern in the country. Half of India’smost severe poverty is concentrated in justfive states-Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, MadhyaPradesh and Rajasthan. India almost becameself-sufficient in foodgrains. But hunger deathis increasing day by day.Journal of Rural Development, Vol. 30, No. 4, October - December : 2011
