3.4.3. Timed Text Concepts and Requirements3.4.3.1. IntroductionTimed Text (e.g., captions and/or subtitles) is text information that may be presented atdefinite times during a <strong>Digital</strong> <strong>Cinema</strong> presentation.3.4.3.2. File FormatTimed Text data is required to be encoded as a standardized, XML-based document.Note: This provides for presentation via:• Overlay in main or secondary projector image (open), or• External display (closed)3.4.3.3. RestartThe <strong>Digital</strong> <strong>Cinema</strong> equipment and Timed Text file is required to re-synchronize after arestart of the system.3.4.3.4. Default FontFont files are required to be used to render Timed Text for subtitle applications. Fontfiles can be used to render Timed Text for caption applications. When used, font files arerequired to conform to [ISO/IEC 00000 OpenType 6 ]. Timed Text files are required to beaccompanied by all font files required for reproduction of the Timed Text.The Timed Text file format is required to support a default character set. It is requiredthat there be a default Unicode character set and a default font for that character set.In event that an external font file is missing or damaged, the subtitle rendering device isrequired to use a default font supplied by the manufacturer. The default character set isrequired to be a Unicode ISO Latin-1 character set. The default font is required toconform to [ISO/IEC 00000 OpenType] and support the ISO Latin-1 character set.3.4.3.5. IdentificationThe Timed Text format requires the cardinal language of the text to be identified.3.4.3.6. SearchabilityA pure text stream is encouraged to isolate content from rendering markup forsearchability.3.4.3.7. Multiple CaptionsThe Timed Text format shall allow the display of multiple captions simultaneously. Thereshall be a maximum number of 3 lines of text allowed for simultaneous display.Note: This allows for spatial representation for captions when two people are talkingsimultaneously.6 OpenType specification is a work-in-progress.
