8. PROJECTION8.1. IntroductionThe Projection System is an essential part of the Digital Cinema System. Its job is to changedigital image data into light that appears on the screen. This section is broken into parts to helpdefine the requirements, interfaces and performance specifications. Bearing in mind that a coregoal is to have the mastering room image seen by the public, it is intended that the projectionsystem should faithfully replicate the DCDM as is described in Section 3 DIGITAL CINEMADISTRIBUTION MASTER.8.2. Projection System Overview8.2.1. Functional FrameworkFor the purpose of documenting the specific requirements and standards for a DigitalCinema Projection system, it is helpful to divide the system into a set of components. Thespecifications and performance requirements for each of these components will bedescribed in the following sections:• Colorimetry – The method for color conversion (see Section: 3.2.1.4 Colorimetry.)• Performance Parameters – Performance specifications and requirements• Interfaces – The physical connections to and from the projector (see Section 8.4Projector Interfaces)8.2.2. Projection Fundamental Requirements8.2.2.1. IntroductionDigital Cinema presents a challenge to create a versatile projection system. Throughoutthis system, some basic requirements are needed and are stated below.8.2.2.2. InterfacesThe projector is required to have the following interfaces:• For control and status, 100Base-T Ethernet [IEEE 802.3] interface. The projector can have:• Graphics and/or Text Interface (could be the same as Control andDiagnostics, e.g., Ethernet Interface)The projector is required to have either an:• Uncompressed image interface (with Link Encryption), or a• Media Block Interface (if the Media Block is installed in the projector)The projector is required to not have any test, utility or output interface that providesunencrypted content in the clear.DCI Digital Cinema System Specification v.1.2 Page 79
