7.1. Introduction7. THEATER SYSTEMSTheater Systems for Digital Cinema incorporates all of the equipment required to make atheatrical presentation within an auditorium located within a Theater complex. Thisencompasses projectors, Media Blocks, Security Managers, storage, sound systems, DCPingest, theater automation, Screen Management System (SMS) and Theater ManagementSystem (TMS). The Screen Management System (SMS) provides the theater manager a userinterface for local control of the auditorium such as start, stop, select a Show Playlist and edit aShow Playlist. At a higher level is the Theater Management System (TMS). The TMS cancontrol, supervise and report status on all of the equipment in the Theater as well as perform allthe duties of the SMS. This section will define the requirements and interconnectivity of a TMSand multiple SMSs within a theater complex.7.2. Theater System Overview7.2.1. Functional FrameworkFor the purpose of documenting the specific requirements and specifications for a DigitalCinema Theater System, it is helpful to divide the system into a set of components. Thespecifications and performance requirements for each of these components will bedescribed in the following sections:• Screen and Theater Management Systems – The human interface for the DigitalCinema System• Theater Systems Architecture – The equipment and interconnect within theTheatero Single Screen Architectureo Multiplex Architecture7.2.2. Theater System Major ConceptsTheater Systems can have a wide range of responsibilities. They are required to provide atheatrical presentation in a timely manner along with controlling the environment in which itis presented. To simplify this complex system, each major component of a Digital CinemaTheater System is reviewed and shown how they interconnect. The human interface of thesingle screen system is the Screen Management System (SMS). It is required that there beone SMS for each auditorium. The Screen Management System (SMS) provides userinterface to control (start, stop, pause, load playlist, etc.) a single auditorium. The TheaterManagement System (TMS) allows a theater manager to control many or all auditoriumswithin a theater complex from a central location This is the interface that allows for control, show programming, troubleshooting, asset management and status of the Digital Cinemaequipment. There are many different scenarios for the implementation of the SMS and theTMS.7.2.3. Theater System Fundamental RequirementsDigital Cinema Theater Systems have some basic requirements that are stated below.DCI Digital Cinema System Specification v.1.2 Page 59
