Steelpoort, which up until recently fell under <strong>the</strong> Mpumalanga provincial jurisdiction, is an old<br />
mining town. The most significant development in <strong>the</strong> area is <strong>the</strong> Ferrochrome Smelter, which has<br />
been in operation since 1999 24 .<br />
6.14 Socio-economic profile<br />
6.14.1 Demographic in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />
The Greater Tubatse Local Municipality covers an area of over 4,550 km 2 and is home to an<br />
estimated 343,468 people. Approximately 51% of <strong>the</strong> population is below <strong>the</strong> age of 17, while<br />
44% is between <strong>the</strong> ages of 18 and 64. Ninety-nine percent of <strong>the</strong> population is African 25 .<br />
6.14.2 Energy<br />
Electricity is <strong>the</strong> most common <strong>for</strong>m of commercial energy in <strong>the</strong> urban areas of <strong>the</strong> District, but a<br />
significant portion of people living in rural areas do not have access to electricity and use<br />
alternative means of energy <strong>for</strong> heating and lighting (Table 6-3) 26 .<br />

6.14.3 Education<br />
The teacher to student ratio in <strong>the</strong> Local Municipality is approximately 1:50. The overall literacy<br />
rate is 28%. Forty percent of <strong>the</strong> population has no <strong>for</strong>mal education and 10% of <strong>the</strong> population<br />
has completed Matric. Table 6-4 summarises <strong>the</strong> level of education within <strong>the</strong> municipality 27 .<br />
