ASK cards <strong>and</strong> tickets are be<strong>in</strong>g used by Gruppo Tor<strong>in</strong>ese Trasporti (GTT) <strong>and</strong> Società Italiana Traforo Autostrade del Frejus (SITAF) to drive an <strong>in</strong>novative ticket<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> fare collection system dur<strong>in</strong>g the 20th W<strong>in</strong>ter Olympic Games. GTT lead the project to provide a pioneer<strong>in</strong>g payment system <strong>in</strong> the Tor<strong>in</strong>o region us<strong>in</strong>g ASK’s TanGObased CT4002 contactless smart cards <strong>and</strong> C.ticket® contactless paper tickets. ‘The card is compatible with the Calypso system of transport. Adopted by more than 40 cities <strong>in</strong> various countries, Calypso is a practical st<strong>and</strong>ard, safe <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> constant development represent<strong>in</strong>g the European st<strong>and</strong>ard of mobility.”[3] [5] Smart cards can be purchased at a number of locations around the city, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the A32 motorway Service Centre at Avigliana, at the Sitaf-Susa <strong>in</strong>formation booth, at the A43 motorway toll barrier <strong>in</strong> Sa<strong>in</strong>t Michel de Maurienne, <strong>and</strong> at the Portanova railway station <strong>and</strong> Caselle airport outside Tur<strong>in</strong>. [7] The card was available dur<strong>in</strong>g the 2006 Olympics <strong>and</strong> Paraolympics, <strong>and</strong> offered a reduced rate for a comb<strong>in</strong>ation with the Tor<strong>in</strong>o Card (5 € less). [3] [4] [9] The Tor<strong>in</strong>o Card, available for periods of 24 or 72 hours or 5 days, allows free access <strong>and</strong> discount to a number of cultural facilities: (Free travel on all urban <strong>and</strong> suburban public transport, Free entry <strong>in</strong> more than 140 museums, exhibitions, monuments, castles, fortresses <strong>and</strong> Royal Residences <strong>in</strong> Tur<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> Piedmont, Free access to the TurismoBus Tor<strong>in</strong>o, to the panoramic lift <strong>in</strong> the Mole Antonelliana,to the Sassi-Superga rack tramway <strong>and</strong> to the boats on the river Po, Discounts on guided tours, plays, concerts, opera, car <strong>and</strong> bike rental <strong>and</strong> much more!) [8] GTT manages the public transport networks <strong>in</strong> Tor<strong>in</strong>o <strong>and</strong> its suburbs. Whilst season ticket-holders tend to use new GTT dual <strong>in</strong>terface card, there are 4 different contactless paper tickets to meet the needs of other users: a pass for school children, a multimodal pass, a pass for tourists <strong>and</strong> tickets to museums <strong>and</strong> galleries. [1] GTT issued five special new tickets on the occasion of the Olympic games, cover<strong>in</strong>g the entire area <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the Games, valid for different services. The tickets are equipped with magnetic b<strong>and</strong>, hologram <strong>and</strong> bil<strong>in</strong>gual word<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the graphic design, <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with the new GTT ticket<strong>in</strong>g system <strong>in</strong> use s<strong>in</strong>ce the start-up of the new Underground, shows athletes <strong>in</strong> action <strong>in</strong> the different Olympic w<strong>in</strong>ter sports. [2] SI-PASS is advertised on its own website as an ‘efficient <strong>in</strong>strument, a passe-partout open<strong>in</strong>g doors <strong>in</strong> all Europe <strong>in</strong> one movement’. [3] The open<strong>in</strong>g ceremony for the Tor<strong>in</strong>o2006 W<strong>in</strong>ter Olympics <strong>in</strong> February declared a new era for urban traffic schemes with the <strong>in</strong>troduction of the world’s first <strong>in</strong>tegrated traffic Smart Card system. Oddvar Solemsli, sales <strong>and</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g director for Q-Free said: “The Tur<strong>in</strong> project to protect a historic city <strong>and</strong> to keep traffic mov<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the few weeks of the Olympic Games is considered as a flagship model of how an <strong>in</strong>tegrated transport model can work. [7] In a world first for contactless technology, ASK delivers a s<strong>in</strong>gle contactless card for both public transport <strong>and</strong> highway toll payments.
