Fo r many years now , thesest uden ts, wh o can be seen glaring a t t he cold hardworld from the following pages, have been pl odding th eir wa y through various schools. Theymust have often asked themselv es whether th estruggle was worth while.Quite certainly, the gen eral public does notrealise ju st how hard it has all been. 'W hen yOllrgirl friend has more money than you ; your mateswho started work years ago ha ve a car that doesnot need to be pushed; yOll have had to forgo theweek -end sn ow trips or tennis parties because yo u rdesign is not yet fini shed; and you can't join theyo u th club because it is held mid-week when yo uha ve to study -these things a re all cause for con cern to the active, dev eloping teen-ager. No oneca n blame him for his occasional discouragement.And now, now that the end is in sight. he isbeing told that this is only a beginning. He hasonly been learning how to stu d y. and furtherstudy at night school is desirable. Well ' H as itbeen worth the efIort?T o begin with, th ere ar e some obv ious materialrewards. Sinc e the in crod uc tion of the Engineers'Award th ere is the guaranteed minimum sa la ryof [2.200 p.a. within a few yea rs. Then, sh ouldthere be a recession or depression at any time,the trained person is more likely to remain in ajob than is the untrained or only partly trained.Secondly, th ere is the sa tisfaction which is to begai ned from a job well done. The artist and theengineer a re both cre ators. The engineer makesor controls the making of bridges, ca rs, safety pinsand rockets, and the artis t helps with th e designo r sales of the pan. Students from this Collegewill be helping to develop our ci vilisation-somequite ob viously and others not so obviously. Someof these students will become teachers. There isno more rewarding job than that of workingwith and helping to mould th e development ofocher people.Xow , a final word of ad vice. Don't stagnate.Co ntinue studying, join clubs - political, social orreform. Make yo u r vo ice heard. You and peoplelik e you are the future hope of Australia, butbecause you have a d iploma, don 't carry ane;\agger a ted idea of yourself"Let another praise you, andmouth,A strange r . and not with your own lips."not you r ownR.
