While this does notguarantee a spot in the tent, your vehicle will likely beincluded in the Theme Exhibit.Sometimes, there is confusion about the tent and theTheme Exhibit area. Having your vehicle accepted toparticipate in the Theme Exhibit does not necessarilymean it will be displayed in the tent. In addition to thetent, the Theme Exhibit area includes the paved areasurrounding the tent and the roped-off lawn directlywest of the tent. There have been upset participants whobelieved their vehicle would be displayed in the tent, because they were invited to be in the Theme Exhibit.Vehicles pre-selected for the tent will have a separatedocument stating they are to be in the tent. Each year, volunteers from the Wisconsin Chapter—Society of Automotive Historians (WSAH) work with theIola Old Car Show staff to determine a theme for the followingyear. The WSAH typically tries to select vehiclesthat represent each decade, a variety of body styles andunusual, rare and desirable models. If you have preregisteredand sent in photos of your reasonably show-worthyvehicle, it will be a candidate for the tent, providedit meets the basic guidelines. If two or more vehicles areequally qualified, the earlier registration will be selected.Other guidelines for a spot in the tent include being ableto leave the vehicle from Thursday morning until Sundayafternoon and having a vehicle that is basically unmodified, but may include period accessories. We also hear, “My car (or my son’s/friend’s/wife’scar) is better than the one in the tent,” implying that weshould replace the one that has been selected with the“better” one. It isn’t necessarily the better vehicle thatis chosen for the tent. It is the one that meets the guidelinesand fills a need. Variety is the key.Clubs are an important part of the old car hobby, andthose involved with the Theme Exhibit will be invitedto have a space in the tent. Members can often answerquestions about vehicles in the tent since thatis their area of expertise. The WSAH is not a car club, but an organizationfor anyone interested in preserving and accuratelyinterpreting automotive history. It producedthe book “Wisconsin Cars and Trucks”and the video “A Walk through Automotive Historywith Chet Krause,” and offers continuingsupport to the Wisconsin Automotive Museumin Hartford. Besides organizing and overseeingthe Theme Exhibit, WSAH members sell collectiblecar show items including buttons, pins, coins, model cars and posters. Applications formembership and more information are availableat the WSAH display area.56
