2012] JEWISH GIRLS AND ANTISEMITISM 547given her life an 8 instead <strong>of</strong> a 10, said, “Because I’m really happy wi<strong>the</strong>verything that’s happening [to me], but people <strong>for</strong> our culture, thingsaren’t so good.” Someone else who lowered her score said: “Because <strong>of</strong>what goes on to people who are Jewish.” The fact that 5 out <strong>of</strong> 12 10-yearoldgirls in Year 1 (41%) rated <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives lower because <strong>of</strong>antisemitism strikes this researcher as disturbing.These Girls’ Conceptualization <strong>of</strong> <strong>Antisemitism</strong>Given <strong>the</strong> well-established relationship between cognitive and emotionalprocesses (Oatley 2004), it is important to understand how <strong>the</strong>se girlsnot only felt about antisemitism, but also how <strong>the</strong>y thought about it. All <strong>the</strong>girls in this study who described antisemitic incidents were asked why <strong>the</strong>ythought that that incident had occurred, or why things like that happen in<strong>the</strong> world. Below are some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir answers, according to each year <strong>of</strong> thisstudy.Year 1“People think that <strong>the</strong>y [<strong>the</strong> Jews] are lesser people. That we’re lesserpeople.”“Because <strong>the</strong>y have to blame <strong>the</strong>ir problems on someone, so <strong>the</strong>ydecided on Jews.”“Because being Jewish . . . <strong>the</strong>re’s always going to be hatred towardsyou.”“People are making out that being Jewish is something like that’s abad thing, but <strong>the</strong>re’s nothing bad . . . it’s just a different . . . just believingdifferent things.”“Because <strong>the</strong>y hate Jews . . . But I don’t know why <strong>the</strong>y hate us—Idon’t think we did anything bad to hurt <strong>the</strong>m.”“I don’t get why people would ever do that just because <strong>of</strong> a religion.Like, I don’t think we’re bad or mean or anything like that.”Year 2“There always is going to be [antisemitism], cause some people justfeel that way. Like some people feel that we should not be here . . . Theydon’t like us. They’re followers <strong>of</strong> Hitler.”“I think <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong>ir own problems and sometimes it’s just <strong>the</strong>m,like <strong>the</strong>y may be sick. But sometimes it might be just, like, people whodislike Jews because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own reasons. And I don’t know what thoseare.”One girl in Year 2 expressed some self-doubt because <strong>of</strong> antisemitism,and perhaps some self-blame. She said that when an antisemitic incident
