Elective <strong>Nursing</strong> CoursesIn order to meet graduation requirements for the two year curriculum plan, a minimum<strong>of</strong> 2 semester hours in nursing electives must be taken.NUR 150/NUR 151 Stress Management for NursesThis course is about stress, its effects on the human being, and methods for copingsuccessfully with pressures <strong>of</strong> stress. Emphasis will be placed upon specific stressorslikely to be present in the lives <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional nurses. Additionally, the course willhelp the student learn ways in which they can, as health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, assist otherswith the management <strong>of</strong> stress. (Prerequisites: Core Completion) (NUR 150 2-0-2)or (NUR 151 4-0-4)NUR 152/NUR 153 Successful AgingThis course is designed to increase understanding and appreciation <strong>of</strong> normal agingprocesses and age-related physiological changes. Emphasis is placed on positivedevelopmental attributes and creative approaches that enrich life processes andencourage independence and function. (Prerequisites: Core Completion) (NUR 1522-0-2) or (NUR 153 4-0-4)NUR 156 Leadership ULeadership U is a course designed to increase the student’s understanding and appreciation<strong>of</strong> the benefits <strong>of</strong> participation in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional nursing organization. The course provides asupplementary learning opportunity for students to develop leadership skills whileenhancing pr<strong>of</strong>essional socialization. This course is designed to give students theopportunity to be recognized for the leadership and management skills they developthrough participation in NSNA’s programs and activities. (Varying credit 1-4)NUR 158 Learning EnhancementThe overall goal <strong>of</strong> this course is to improve comprehension and application <strong>of</strong> requirednursing course content, and classroom and standardized test-taking ability. This course isstructured to assist the student with personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional development and academicsuccess. It focuses on the synthesis <strong>of</strong> theories, concepts, and practices taught throughoutthe curriculum. Emphasis is on teaching the student to use appropriate resources to fostersuccess in test-taking and overall curriculum success. (Prerequisites: none) (2-0-2)NUR 159 Transcultural <strong>Nursing</strong>This course focuses on transcultural nursing <strong>of</strong> an Appalachian community within aChristian service learning frame. The emphasis <strong>of</strong> the course is to increase cultyuralcompetence and to provide holistic care to a rural, underserved population through aservice learning experience. The course culminates in a mission trip to an Appalachiancommunity. Students prepare for the trip by participating in orientation, planning meetings,and completing course projects. Students will participate in debriefing following the trip.(Prerequisites: completion <strong>of</strong> at least one clinical nursing course)NUR 250/NUR 251 Caring in Times <strong>of</strong> Death, Dying, and BereavementThis experiential course is designed to facilitate personal growth and self-awareness asthe lived experience <strong>of</strong> death, dying, and bereavement is explored. Content andactivities in this seminar will facilitate each student’s identification <strong>of</strong> his/her own set <strong>of</strong>values and beliefs related to death so that the student can then examine how thesefactors influence his/her use <strong>of</strong> the nursing process.
