Building on knowledgeacquired from the quantitative and qualitative research courses, learners exploreselect phenomena <strong>of</strong> interest from a mixed methods research approach. Attention isdirected to mixed methods design selection, data collection, analyses, and discussion<strong>of</strong> findings. Implications and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration onresearch projects utilizing mixed methods research are also addressed. Prerequisites:NUR 805, NUR 806 (3 – hours)NUR 810 Ethics in Health care and ResearchThis course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to criticallyexamine ethical issues and dilemmas encountered in health care delivery andresearch. Students will explore intersections <strong>of</strong> personal convictions, pr<strong>of</strong>essionalresponsibilities, legal obligations, and situational dilemmas utilizing a variety <strong>of</strong>interdisciplinary approaches. Classic and current bioethics literature will bereferenced throughout the course. Prerequisite: Admission to the program. (2 –hours)NUR 811 Philosophical Influences on <strong>Nursing</strong> ScienceThe purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to explore the structure <strong>of</strong> science by analyzinghistorical and contemporary ways <strong>of</strong> knowing. An examination <strong>of</strong> theepistemological and ontological underpinnings <strong>of</strong> science enables the student toconsider the strengths and limitations <strong>of</strong> science. The course provides anopportunity to explore challenges and controversies in developing nursingknowledge and nursing. Prerequisite:Admission to the program. (2 – hours)NUR 812 Knowledge and Theory Development in <strong>Nursing</strong>The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to explore the scholarly development <strong>of</strong> the discipline<strong>of</strong> nursing. Historical, contemporary, educational, scientific, and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalinfluences on the development <strong>of</strong> theoretical knowledge in nursing are explored.Various methods <strong>of</strong> theory development are examined with emphasis on the skillsneeded for theory analysis and theory development. The development and analysis<strong>of</strong> theory in nursing and methods for derivation <strong>of</strong> concepts and theories to generatenursing knowledge are examined. The conceptual basis <strong>of</strong> selected nurse theorists isanalyzed. The relationship between research and clinical practice to theorygeneration and testing is explored. Prerequisite: NUR 811 (2 – hours)NUR 813 Dissertation Proposal DevelopmentThe purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to facilitate development <strong>of</strong> the dissertation proposaland to initiate preparation for the dissertation prospectus defense. Practical issuesrelated to completing the dissertation research are addressed including <strong>College</strong> and<strong>University</strong> dissertation requirements, selection <strong>of</strong> the dissertation chair and members,as well as communication with the dissertation committee.NUR 814 Health Care Systems AnalysisThe purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to provide students the opportunity to critically assesseconomic, cultural, political, and sociological factors which influence health care andGraduate Program83
