Guidelines for the AHRQ fellowships may be found on theAHRQ Web Site at http://www.ahrq.gov/fund/hhspolicy.htm.1.3 Fellowship Activity Codes and Program GuidelinesThe Kirschstein-NRSA program helps ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists is available inadequate numbers and in appropriate research areas to carry out the Nation’s biomedical and behavioralresearch agenda. Kirschstein-NRSA fellowships are awarded as a result of national competition forresearch training in specified health-related areas. Certain specialized individual fellowships, such as thepredoctoral fellowships (F31 and F30), postdoctoral fellowships (F32), Senior Fellowships (F33), andother institute-specific fellowship programs are provided under this authority. For individual predoctoralfellowships, NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) have differing requirements. All NIH ICs except FogartyInternational Center (FIC) and National Library of Medicine (NLM) award Kirschstein-NRSAfellowships. FIC and NLM have unique funding authorities for fellowships that are not under theKirschstein-NRSA authority.This Application Guide contains information for preparing applications for Individual Fellowshipsavailable from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Agency for Healthcare Research andQuality (AHRQ). These fellowships are available at the predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior fellowshiplevels. These include both Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) and non-NRSAprograms. It is important to note that not all predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior fellowships aresupported by each IC and AHRQ. Therefore, individuals interested in this type of award are stronglyencouraged to consult with the appropriate NIH IC and AHRQ before submitting an application. (Forexample, Postdoctoral (F32) fellowships are provided by the NIH ICs and AHRQ. AHRQ does notprovide senior fellowships.) This action is of utmost importance because applications with marginal or norelevance to the mission of the participating ICs or AHRQ will not be accepted for review or funding.Thus, specific FOAs always should be consulted for guidance.Contact information can be found in each Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) published as aprogram announcement or request for applications and below in the Interactions with NIH and AHRQStaff section.For more information, see the NIH Research Training and Career Development Web site athttp://grants.nih.gov/training/extramural.htm and the AHRQ Research Training Web site athttp://www.ahrq.gov/fund/training/rsrchtng.htm.A partial list of fellowship activity codes is provided below.
