Additionally, wewould like to learn more about your roles at ADOT and your perspectives on climate change andhow this research ef<strong>for</strong>t might be helpful to you.We would like to cover three main topics in this interview: Identify ADOT’s relevant guidelines and specifications where climate impacts maymodify design or operational thresholds; Understand <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> climate adaptation as per best practices today, and how yourfunction at ADOT can fit; Brainstorm existing and potential tools, data, guidance, or o<strong>the</strong>r resources related toextreme wea<strong>the</strong>r or climate change that individuals wished <strong>the</strong>y had to help in<strong>for</strong>mdecision making activities.General Overview Questions – Warm Up (10 minutes)1. In <strong>the</strong> on-line survey questionnaire which you filled out, we asked respondents about<strong>the</strong>ir perspectives on climate change. Do you think that climate change is affecting <strong>the</strong>desert Southwest? If so, how?2. How important is it <strong>for</strong> ADOT to prepare <strong>for</strong> future impacts <strong>of</strong> climate change?Relevant Guidelines and Standards Related to Precipitation and O<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Climate</strong> Impacts(20 minutes)Let’s walk through <strong>the</strong> climate impacts that we developed from <strong>the</strong> climate impacts matrix.1. What are <strong>the</strong> impacts that you see in Arizona. Discuss any specification or guidelines thatcurrently deal with extreme wea<strong>the</strong>r (precipitation, snowpack, etc). Can you <strong>for</strong>esee <strong>the</strong>changing <strong>of</strong> any design or operational thresholds based on changing precipitation?Process <strong>of</strong> <strong>Climate</strong> <strong>Adaptation</strong> at ADOT (20 minutes)2. Could you provide an example <strong>of</strong> how ADOT has implemented an agency-wide ef<strong>for</strong>t(e.g., internal strategic plan, etc.)? What steps were involved?3. What might persuade you or encourage you to plan <strong>for</strong> climate adaptation within yourcurrent work processes? Are <strong>the</strong>re any existing barriers that would dissuade you fromplanning <strong>for</strong> climate adaptation?Potential Tools, Resources and Areas <strong>for</strong> Fur<strong>the</strong>r Research (10 minutes)4. Are <strong>the</strong>re any recent agency-wide events or in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>the</strong> project team should be aware<strong>of</strong> that could affect an internal ADOT ef<strong>for</strong>t to discuss and begin to incorporate <strong>the</strong> topic<strong>of</strong> climate change into <strong>the</strong> agency’s work?5.
