CHAPTER 3. MATERIALS, METHODS, AND DATAAs part of the overalll goal to helpADOT become more resilient withrespect to climate change, the first preliminary assessment step is to conduct a “knowledge mapping” exercise to helpdetermine the planning, project developmentt, and asset managementt process flowat ADOT.This exercise could begin to zeroin on decision-makingpoints that could (or currently)incorporate information about current weather-related disruptions and/or future climate stressors.RESEARCH APPROACHThe research approach for this study began with the literature review, used an online surveyquestionnaire, structured interviews and focus groups to refine the knowledge map, thensummarized the findings. The ADOT climate adaptation research plan effort involved four main work tasks, as illustratedin Figure7. These steps culminated in a set of findings and recommendations forfurther researchor action, which are included in the Chapter 4, Discussion of Findings; and Chapter 5, ResearchRecommendations.Source: Cambridge Systematics, Inc., 2012.Figure 7. ADOT Climate Adaptationn Study Research PlanThe purpose of conducting the online surveyquestionnaire was to achieve the following: Refine the “Knowledge Map” by identifying key ADOT staffwith decision-makingauthority andthe ability to incorporate climate change adaptation into planning, design, and operations in their precise job functions. Gauge staff perceptions about how certain climate scenarios would impact ADOT’sfacilities and processes.29
